Description: “There is a lower cloud layer developing.”

“Yep. So what? It’s scattered.”

“It’s scattered now, but it’s getting less so.”

“When it gets too unscattered, we’ll have to do something else I guess.”

It did gather to almost solid. A crack in the clouds offered a path to descend down below the deck.

“How do you know it’s not a ‘sucker’ hole?”

“It looks too nice to be a trick.”

“Don’t you remember the coyote’s message? You just might be outsmarting yourself. There is more to safe flying than just looking good.”

“Fine. I’ll just check the weather at Andalusa.”

There was no tricky sucker hole. With the reported ceiling at 1200’, there was just enough room to squeeze in.

“It’s really bumpy down here and there isn’t much room to maneuver.”

“At least our groundspeed has picked up.”

“At the expense of having fewer emergency options. I think it is about time we found an airport to wait until the clouds lift.”

“Who knows how long that would be? We’ll just keep on keeping on until we have to stop.”

“How low do you plan to go?”

“One thousand and no more. See, the chart shows 1000 is a safe altitude.”

“It does not. It shows 1000 is the maximum elevation figure for KNOWN obstructions. It says nothing about safe.”

“Well, okay, 1001 then, and no more.”

“Or less. Watch out! A bird!”

“Yep. A black bird. Looks like we missed him.”

“And that tower!”

“Oh, yeah. Well, we’ll miss that too.”

“Barely. Saved by a crow. That should tell you something.”

“Okay, fine. I’ll make it 1010 then.”

“You are missing the signs. A crow is a sure sign of change. According to Native American legend, crows can simultaneously see three fates: past, present and future.”

“Yeah, but can they predict the weather?”

“The crow knows that the world you see is just one of a billion. Knowing this, Crow can bend the laws of the physical universe, shifting its shape in the process.”

“How nice. Maybe he shape shifted into a brick. That’s how he got out of the way so quickly.”

“Laugh if you must. Watch the signs around you or you’re destined to blindly flail about left to the vagaries of any old fate.”

“Sounds like fun. Instead of worrying about signs you should do a little research. Most bird strikes occur in aircraft traveling at more than 90 knots. Any slower and the birds can get out of the way.”

“The operative word here is ‘most.’”

“You are sooo right! You never know. We might be the ones to run into the only one winged blind crow in Alabama.”

“Or the antenna he is perched on.”
