Geez, they could save a lot of money by just giving one to John so he could take pictures of Carolyn sitting on the shores of Lake Mead.

Carolyn says that she is past bikini age, so ask Martha to pose with the Icon.

As you've shown with your pictures, John, Carolyn doesn't need a bikini to add sparkle to any photograph.

And look: it comes with a three-legged stand to keep the tires from going flat.

It looks to me like the stand is to keep it from tiping backwords with the wings folded and no pilot for balast.

Another great 'artist concept' from the Sharper Image aviation branch...

Four years back, I was promised a Czech Mermaid within six months at around $100K. A complete Mermaid was then flying, production was looming.

Now, production is STILL in the future, if ever; the company has posted its latest price calculator: for a bare-bones Mermaid (it's pretty spartan, compared to the Icon), customers will pay $146K.

The present Icon is a concept; the only flying model is an empty shell that is styled like the proposed bird, sans interior, instruments, gear assembly or wing-fold mechanisms. It has to be held upright in the water to keep from falling over. Now, it looks like you'll have to tote a stand everywhere you intend to fold the wings, so it doesn't tip over on land...

I'm guessing the Icon will never reach market in its dreamy current form. If the finished product (assuming there is one) even remotely resembles the initial concept it's gotta be at least $200K.

Re Icon:

For the past 28 years, I've been a tech analyst up here in Canada. I have also raised fairly serious sums of dough for a broad variety of tech-based companies over that time frame. As a result of this background, I have accumulated plenty of scars and a degree of cynicism.

If I had a financial involvement with the Icon folk, I would be worried. Small companies tackling demanding tech projects ALWAYS require more money and more time than expected. Icon's lavish spending on marketing at this stage of the game is ill-considered. They need to get their prototype into a heavy 'de-bugging' flight progam, as well as a serious diet. It is also important that the company sort out the myriad of manufacturing problems that always pop up once the move is made from a prototype to a production model. Then, and only then, is marketing intelligent. Even so, I can't see the value of expensive 'coming-out' parties or mega-buck display environments at major air shows for this kind of aircraft, but perhaps I am simply 'old-fashioned' in my views about how money should be spent.

The Icon aircraft is certainly sexy-looking but this is bound to wear off if you cannot take a friend and some gear to a distant destination. At this stage of its development, the load-carrying capability of the Icon leaves much to be desired.

It would be unfair to comment on its performance at this stage of the game, but I would be willing to bet that the sponsons prove to be inadequate with respect to keeping the wing tips out of the drink in crosswinds. I would also be surprised if they did not create consequential wave drag in choppy water, which would impede the ability of the Icon to quickly get up on the step.

All of the above notwithstanding, it will be interesting to follow its progress.

Best,
Larry
