Description:
It was 50 degrees in central Virginia today, and Aventura Matt and I just had to celebrate with lunch at the Dockside restaurant, on the James River, east of Hopewell. There are better looking places to beach on the other side of the parking lot, but the bottom is so flat there that if you're still there when the tide goes out, you'll stay for dinner, too. It was high tide when we got there, so we headed for the steeper bottom.
(The picture is two photos stitched together. The dock doesn't really have a bend in it.)

Why didn't you use your dock thingy on the dock? Could have kept you feet dry.

I've never tried it there, Jeff. The dock is pretty high, even at high tide, and I don't think it would be easy to climb up onto it from the SeaRey. And the tide is about 3 feet there, so it would be even harder at low tide. The beach, on the other hand, is easy. The bottom is sandy and on that side it slopes enough that the chance of getting stuck is relatively low unless it's a really long lunch. (Matt and I found out the hard way a few years ago that the other side of the dock is not good when the tide is going out.) Also, I'd rather be on the beach in the lee of those trees than bobbing around out at the end of the dock.

Great job Don, are you close to Fort Lee, Va, my daughter who is a Captain in the <br />Army is going to school there, starting June 1. I am planning on visiting her with my <br />Mooney, maybe we can meet for lunch. Best Phil Mendelson

Good plan, Phil! Just to orient you, this restaurant is only a few miles from Fort Lee, on the southeast side of the bay under the word "stacks." We live in Richmond, but I keep the SeaRey at KFCI, which is probably slightly closer to Fort Lee than KPTB (not shown here).<P><img src="inline/20057-Picture_4.jpg" alt="Picture 4"><P>If you have some pull--there's a paved runway right about where the word "prison" is. It's a federal prison, but the runway is outside the wire. I've heard that only one airplane has ever landed on it--except for a model airplane club that lands models on it.<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or > missing in user HTML.
