What was the ceiling just then? Looks like a good 100 feet.

    Don,

It was probably about 300 to 400, but that doesn't deter bush pilots. The weather is like this most the summer, so if they are going to make the mortgage payments on those Beavers and 206s, they have to fly. Despite the obvious rule breaking, I never felt un-safe. All the pilots use TAWS and know the routes like the back of their hands. They have a radio system to keep each other informed of who is where. Despite the obvious few lumps in the ground, most the area is obstruction free, very flat and full of rivers and lakes. If the weather pushes them too low, they will land on the nearest body of water which is nearly everywhere here and wait until it changes which can be very quick.

That's what's wrong with mortgage payments, Robert. They can lower the ceiling and viz way below minimum.
But if I remember correctly, in Class G all you need to be legal is to see a mile and be taking off or landing. (I like those long, shallow climbouts and approaches.)

Here's an excellent reason to buy an iPhone or iPod Touch: http://www.i-hud.com/
