All too soon I was back to Richmond and the smooth ride was coming to its end.
The sun was to the west and the view of the city was considerably clearer than when I had departed.
Somewhere inside the red circle is St. John's church, where in anno domini 1775 a bunch of guys met to discuss what to do about King George's latest tax plan and his idea of requiring taxpayers to board soldiers in their homes. They were sorely annoyed by all that and some other stuff. They met in Richmond because it was a safe distance from the colonial capitol in Williamsburg.
After they had jawed about it for a long time, one named Patrick Henry stood up and made a long speech that ended wth this:
'The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave. ...There is no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chains are forged! Their clanking may be heard on the plains of Boston! The war is inevitable--and let it come! I repeat it, sir, let it come. . . .Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!' Yikes! Strong words.
(Strong words, indeed, from a man who owned some 75 slaves, even if he did speak out against slavery upon other occasions and claimed that he had not purchased them and said, 'I am drawn along by the general inconvenience of living without them. Well. Almost nothing is as simple and clear as we'd like. Eighty five years later, Richmond became the capitol of the Confederacy and the Civil War began. And today it's a bright city with a population as varied as the planet itself, all getting along with each other rather well.)

Good story Don and great photo of Richmond. I've got a dozen from our old flights up to the Chesapeake but at 5000' and up, they are crummy. Were you at about 1000'?<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or > missing in user HTML. Please fix the HTML.</font> -->
