Nicely balanced, Tony. You could troll for seagulls that way.

The only reason I thought of doing two was that I was worried about the stress one was going to put on my bow eye. With both of us in the hammocks at the same time it should put way less tension on the eye. I forgot to get a picture with both of us in it!

I'll have to look for a couple of those light weight hammocks!
Where did you get them Tony?

Tony Gugliuzza - Sep 28,2009 Viewers | Reply
    Wal-Mart:
$9.95 each.

I don't trust them though, I will probably look for better quality and no wood dowels at a camping shop.

Here is a closer up that might show the lack of quality of the hammock.

If I were going to use it more, I would definitely go for something better, although the nice imported one we have at home is way too big to fit on the 'Rey. Attachments:

I use the hammock when floating in the water- keeps you cool and keeps your head out of the water, never thought to use it on land though

Cheryl picked up a new hammock and I tested it out today.

I like it. Once I prep the webbing for anchoring it quickly it will work like a charm. VERY lightweight - the hammock weighs less than a pound and the biners and webbing are less than 1.4 lb.
This hammock can be used with or without the mosquito net, that is attached, and stuffs into its own attached bag for storage.
Attachments:

Where did she get it. This may be just the thing for taking naps down by the lake.

    She got it at REI.

This was a surprise gift, so after I got it I did some research.

There is a whole world of hammocks used for camping purposes - no tents, just enclosed hammocks.
For backpacking, this is a great idea. You dont need to haul a tent and pads. In the cold the little inflatable pads are necessary to get the thermal protection out of your lightweight sleeping bag - to insulate you from the ground.
With the hammock, you don't need stakes or poles or anything - just a tree.

This one is kind of light duty for hardcore camping, but it is one of the lightest and less expensive (I think $45) ones and seems pretty strong. I certainly wasnt afraid of it breaking like I was with the wal-mart ones.
The Webbing I used is available by the foot at stores that have rock climbing gear, and the carabiners are also from my rock climbing gear and this stuff is super light

Very nice ancillary lifestyle mod Tony! I'll be using this one for sure. Do you think you could mount some sort of eyelet on the strut end for easy connection without compromising structural integrity?

Tony Gugliuzza - Oct 05,2009 Viewers | Reply
I suppose you could, but what I was putting together was pretty simple.

See this picture. The green webbing attaches to the strut in seconds.
I haven't cut the webbing to size yet, so imagine that th4 excess below the knot is cut off.
To make it real sweet you could have it sewn and ditch the knot.
They sell these things for connecting to the handlebars of motorcycles when strapping them down to trailers, but with capacities of 400lbs or so I wouldn't feel safe using them. There is way more than your own weight put on these attachment points because of the angle.
This webbing can take thousands of pounds.

Attachments:
