Description: Vern Gorst also founded Pacific Air Transport, which was the first West Coast airmail carrier. The Spirit of St. Louis was a modified Ryan M1. Charles Lindberg met with my grandfather in Los Angeles so he could learn about the flying characteristics of the M1, as he was awaiting delivery of his own plane.

    Interesting history, John.

It's amazing how many of the planes of that era had such limited visibility. Almost like the windows were an afterthought.

I sat in a reproduction of the Spirit of Saint Louis once, and felt claustrophobic--no window in front at all! But in a long-nosed taildragger you can't see straight ahead anyway while taxiing, taking off, or landing, so maybe it didn't bother those guys so much.
