Description: The definition of passion, 17 years in the making: Paul Weston's second flight in a plane he built entirely from scratch. June 24, 2009. An 82-year-old student pilot made a hard landing on Lake Sammamish this morning, slightly damaging his home-built experimental aircraft and requiring a tow back to shore from a rescue boat, At 1:30 into the video it gets pretty exciting! I'm not sure how wise it is to test your own design with only 30hrs TT as a Sport Pilot! http://vimeo.com/5364455

NTSB thinks it was a stall. Looks like it from the video. The previous video on the same website gives a quick glimpse into the cockpit. Doesn't appear to have an altimeter or VSI. I'm all for people designing, building, etc, but no excuse for not having proper training.

http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20090625X24118&key=
1 Attachments:

Doesn't look like enough wing on it to me.

While I notice a couple of design compromises I would prefer not to make it actually looks quite interesting, especially the blended wing style.

Certainly looks like a stall in, just lucky he was already so low. As a 'Mature' low time guy I don't think early water flights of a new plane are the place for a 30 hour pilot, especially one of so many years. That's scary.
