Description: After Roy left I followed Frank back to X61. From in trail I watched as his gear only partially deployed for landing.

“I’m breaking off to troubleshoot,” he announced.

There’s only so much you can do in the air to get the gear down. I suggested diverting to my dock. He agreed.

Fortunately the gear retracted….mostly. The tail wheel was hanging straight down. Fortunately that didn’t faze Frank or his A-hull on nearly glassy water.

A quick inspection found the tail wheel retraction cable had jumped pulley. I handed my cell phone to Frank as I crawled out on the end of the dock and under the tail feathers with a wrench.

I didn’t see him fall off the dock. I did notice he managed to keep his cap dry. Not so the cell phones and his wallet. While surveying the damage I stepped onto some stinging nettles. Yeow!

Since daylight was fading, I just tied his tail wheel in the down position and flew back to X61. Frank and Zach took the Jeep.

Before departing Frank warned me about operating his hanger tug. I wasn’t listening. When I arrived I just figured I wouldn’t use it. While trying to manhandle the plane back into the hangar, the dolly came loose and I busted my butt on the concrete. Yeow II! Or is that III!

Anyway, my accounting for the day shows the following:
1. sometimes its better just to beach instead of showing off;
2. struts can bruise one or both shoulders if the wheels are buried in soft sand;
3. stinging nettles are aptly named;
4. never trust your cell phone to someone standing on a shaky dock;
5. Frank’s dolly is dangerous.
Some days are just unforgettable. I’ll take some minor pains any day to avoid just another mundane day.

    Jeez Dan - you need to get waterproof cell phones! How many electronic toys have you soaked?

    I'm glad to see Frank's back in the swing of things. It sounds like a grand SeaRey day (in retrospect).

    I'm beginning to suspect my phone is waterproof, Ken. After a day of basking in the sun, it's back in operation (well, Ann says it is really on semi-operational because all it does is make calls).

    Dan, you will have to fix Frank up with your 'L' bracket. Works great!
