Description: Flew my Searey into Tampa International today to catch a commercial flight. Just before I took this picture, the tower said 'Experimental 244 Hotel, Cleared to Land Runway 36 Left, Winds 070 at 17 peak gust 22' My reply was 'Ugh...Anyway I can land on 09?' to which they replied 'Negative, 09 is closed for arrivals'.

OK, Tampa International is using one runway, crosswind beyond max demonstrated for most single engine planes and two jets waiting for me to land so they can take off. DON'T SCREW UP JEFF!! WHEELS DOWN FOR GROUND!!

Land long and make a high speed taxiway into the rollout part of the runway?

Gotta love those ten-mile short finals at 5500 rpm. Jeff, I'll bet you're glad it wasn't KSAV, eh?

10 mile final? How about a 70 mile final ?!? My heading from X36 to TPA was straight north and the only vector I ever got was to turn 10 degrees right for sequencing at one point.

Funny you mention KSAV. I was thinking about that and freaking about the gear on final. Too many similarities. Straight in approach to the north bound runway. Major distraction (cross wind v. first night landing) and the approach to TPA is over water until about the last mile. When to put the gear down ????? I made myself put it down before I took my last picture (above) on final.

At Dulles they had me on right base for about 20 minutes and then turn final about 10 out. I didn't even think about the gear until passing the museum, about 2 miles out, and then I got rattled because of course it was still up. It's really spooky to be on final that long when the runway is more than 11000 feet and about a mile wide.

Now I always put the gear down at 5 miles out, no matter what. (Voice of Experience.) Then the ACI gear warning lady doesn't have to nag me when I lower the flaps. (Usually.)

Jeff, I mentioned KSAV just to get you back for reminding me once about cranberry bogs.

Don, I had forgotten that I reminded you about what you forgot about. Thanks for reminding me.

GULP! GULP! You just raised by blood pressure about 20 points. I've often thought about adding a blood pressure and heart rate gauge to my panel just for grins. This is the kind of stuff that makes flying exciting! Right?
