Description: Departure occurred somewhere around 10 in the morning. Time of Departure (“TOD”) is usually just an approximation. On this day, however, it had significance.

Flight time from Howey-in-theHills to Midland, Ontario was said by the computer to be 12 hours in a SeaRey. Ha! What does a computer know about real time SeaRey flying? I already knew to add three or four hours under the best of circumstances. And the best of circumstances did not include flying up current against the wind or deviating NW to get around weather.

Time had to be monitored closely. Jon had already advised me that the rate of fuel consumption was not standard SeaRey because of the manually operated turbocharger. With a small tank, there was only so much airtime before I had to be back on the ground in close proximity to fuel.

As it turned out, fuel time was not controlling: anxiety was. Not thirty minutes into the flight there came a loud, flappity noise, like a card on the spoke of a very fast bike. The result was some AFT.

Anxious Flying Time (“AFT”) can be either long or short, depending on distance to a suitable landing spot. Fortunately Florida is full of such spots.

Greystone was directly in my flight path. Avoiding hot pavement, I circled to land over John Travolta’s house onto the cool grass.

Rolling to a smooth landing on a carpet of green after some AFT is SeaRey Breather Time (“SeBT”), with a slow release of tightly contained breath. It was a relief to find that the flapping was nothing more than some new prop tape coming off.

Relief quickly turned to disappointment when I realized the consequences: no water operations. With the protective prop tape gone, the risk was too high of damaging the blade tips of someone else’s new joy. That quickly changed the tenor of time, realization changing the clock to SeaRey Deflation Time (“SeDT”).
