Description: There was no following roads for a SeaRey on a time critical mission. The cars, however, followed the Pine Mountain Ridge. They were probably making more progress than me.

The big ridge is 125 miles long and was formed by a thrust fault. At the end of the Paleozoic (about 230 million years ago) a big block of crust was pushed up over southeastern Kentucky. This occurred the last time the Appalachian Mountains were growing and the Permian mass extinction was underway, ending life time for 90% of marine organisms and 70% of terrestrial vertebrates.

The Mississippian and Pennsylvanian age sandstones are really tough, and though the mountains around them have eroded away, the cemented sands remain to form an escarpment.
