VERY INTERESTING!! Captain Chesley Sullenberger (Sully) did not need floats on that fateful day on the Hudson River, January 15th, 2009. Yes, he was very LUCKY that day, all the right things were happening that day. All the water taxies were close by, the weather was good, water was smooth; the plane stayed up long enough to get everyone to safety; and Captain Sully also holds a Commercial Pilot Certificate in Gliders, and he also was an Instructor of single, multi-engine, instrument ratings & Gliders. So he had a lot of experience of gliding planes, of course, this was a much different type of plane; but I'm sure he used everything he knew in his experience to bring this plane to rest on the Hudson. I'm still not sure if it would have been the same outcome with a Pilot that did not have the Glider experience; but that, of course was not the case on that fateful day. Just my 2 cents worth! Judy

I think you are spot on Judy. Our Gimli glider experience here in Canada is similar. When Capt. Bob Pearson did a dead stick landing in his fuel starved B-767, the minimal damage resulted in the plane being flown out 3 days later after a bit of nose wheel repair.......and replacing a few seat covers.
Bob is a superb pilot and was an Ultra Light and glider instructor as well.

A couple of years ago, a charter outfit here in Canada had an Airbus do a deadstick landing in the Azores....due to a total screw-up in fuel (mis) management. The aircraft broke in half and a number of paxs were badly hurt. That pilot had no past experience in powerless flight.
