The climb out of Bishop was brisk. Down right chilly even.      Attachments:

Here’s the payoff for a chilly early morning climb into the mountains: a descent into Mono Lake.      Attachments:

Strange looking mounds adorn the lake side. It’s tufa. Formed in alkaline lakes, likely with the help of mischievous microbes.      Attachments:

What does a high mountain lake, snow on surrounding peaks, with white concretions breaking pea green water make? A grand SeaRey playground.      Attachments:

If green water isn’t to your liking, climb into the blue sky and the water is transformed to blue too.      Attachments:

How about a volcanic island in the middle of the lake with a crust of white calcium carbonate? It’s about as exotic as can be! Who makes this stuff up?      Attachments:

The low side of the lake has a broad beach. We can thank LA for that. It sucks a bunch of water out of the lake.      Attachments:

How does alkaline water affect a SeaRey??

Dan Nickens - May 18,2012   Viewers  | Reply
    It's like a really good pre-wash!

You have to be careful in the pattern when flying over an alkaline lake. The crosswind and down-leg are fine, but the base seems to go on forever...

Climbing out of a high lake surrounded by big rocks is less stressful if you can find some helpful thermals.      Attachments:

Is the beach suitable for wheels? There weren’t any tracks to say. Besides, the water looked too good to fly past.      Attachments:

It’s a great parking place. You can’t get stuck in the muck. Just under the thin crust of lime and sand is a thick gray mud. It pays to walk lightly and leave your shoes off. (You can try to keep shoes on your feet, but the mud is strangely and strongly attracted to them.)      Attachments:

Will the lime crust scratch a hull? Richard took no chances, pulling Puff to deep water. I figured that if Dow puts the stuff in cleaners, it would be a perfect polish for Whiskey Tango’s hull.      Attachments:

Now this is what you expect to find out in the desert. Thinly braided streams, not great green lakes of crystalline lime water.      Attachments:
