Description: Before the daily madness at the boat starts there is time for quiet reflection. That’s because the SeaRey was sent to shore at night to avoid “fouling the aft deck”.

Every afternoon I leave the security of a cozy berth on SuRi for some unknown hotel. It became a standing joke at the downtown Auckland Crowne Plaza that I’d check out most every day only to frequently return the same evening. I tried to explain that I never knew where I would be at the end of the day. Apparently that wasn’t a plausible story. It did, however, win me the sympathy of the desk clerks and some very posh room upgrades!

For the first part of the trip I was closest to the North Shore airport. It is a thirty minute commute to downtown Auckland in good traffic. It was usually good traffic by the time the airplane was washed up and tied down because the sun had set.

The local wind usually starts out quietly in the morning and increases in intensity by the afternoon. That means an early start to get to the yacht before the waves wake up. Late evenings and early mornings left only the aerial commuting time for quiet reflection on Christmas Eve.

The hills look fuzzy soft in the early morning light. They might look a little harder if one were to make an off airport landing. There was no reason for that on such a serene morning. Attachments:

Where’s SuRi? Parked exactly where I told the Captain would be much too rough for SeaReys.

“Why?” I asked, pondering the ocean swells.

“The owner thought it was pretty here.”

Hard to argue with that.
Attachments:

Other than a bit of ocean swell, the place was pretty sweet. Attachments:

All of the support vessels are labeled as “T/T SuRi” or “Tenders To SuRi”. That’s exactly what the SeaRey was on this day, dropping off critical supplies: ten cases of deluxe Magnum ice cream bars, a bottle of golden syrup, and ten boxes of pilchards on ice (bait). Attachments:

SuRi is morphing into its own navy with all the support T/T's.

After all the toys are launched there is room for a BBQ on the aft deck. “So, this is why they don’t want me hanging around at night!” Attachments:

Future replacement for the SeaRey? SuRi’s new drone, fitted with a camera mounted on gimbals. Controlled by iPad. “Ha! Let’s see how it likes the swells!” Attachments:

Let’s see if that drone can deliver Yam the French yoga instructor to SuRi! I’m pretty sure Yam would just as soon fly on a drone judging by his demeanor. Of course he did ask to have his picture taken.

It wasn’t as easy as it might look. Sure, pulling up on a nice quiet beach behind the sand spit was easy. What wasn’t easy was getting permission to do it. Who knew this little spit of a harbour was part of the Greater Auckland Harbour Master’s jurisdiction?

I found out after the SuRi’s captain got a call from the Harbour Master’s office. Why didn’t he give the required 48 hours written notice of any seaplane activity within their jurisdictional waters? 48 hours? Seriously? As the helicopter pilot often says, “I don’t know what I’m doing ten minutes from now, much less tonight.”

Fortunately, despite the rule, the Sandspit harbour master decided forgiveness and a quick phone call an hour before would work too.
Attachments:

Back off the rugged coast of the Hens and Chickens, there was scant opportunity for a casual beaching. Attachments:

Why is it that when the sea lies down to let the SeaRey play that no one wants to fly? Attachments:

Sigh. Fishing instead of flying? What’s up with that? Attachments:

If no one wants to play, I’ll take my toy and go home…or at least back to the airport. Attachments:
