Description: The new sailing plan called for the SeaRey to jump ships. The SuRi was staying in port while the owner’s new boat, “Clubhouse” put to sea. That's her parked next to SuRi.

The Clubhouse is a smaller yacht and intended only for New Zealand ports. It had no accommodations for the SeaRey or its pilot. That was little impediment to the plan to turn the SeaRey into a Clubhouse tender.

Picking up the SeaRey’s primetime pilot, we set out to depart from the rough waters of the open channel in Auckland's harbour. It was a near disaster. About half way through the splash, pop-up and splash-again debacle I firmly announced I was taking control of the airplane. Apparently that wasn’t clear enough because a brief, intense struggle ensued. It was barely won, mostly because the SeaRey absolutely insisted on flying instead of going submarine.

The flight out to the Coromandel Peninsula was mostly quiet. Our destination was either a beach or a nearby airport, depending on water conditions. The helicopter was on its way to meet us at one or the other locations.

Upon sighting the beach, the open ocean swell seemed well within reasonable range for the SeaRey. There was no significant wind. “Cleared for the approach,” I advised the pilot.

“Um, there’s a problem. The trim just ran full nose down.”

“Let me try my side,” I offered. It didn’t work either.

Without prompting, the pilot announced, “It’s your airplane.”

“No argument this time? Thanks a lot.” Off course I didn’t say that, but I thought it!
Attachments:

The beach was voted one of the world’s top 20 deserted beaches in 2006 by The Observer. It might not be deserted for much longer. Efforts are underway to build twenty houses in the hills overlooking the beach. The proposed development has stirred plenty of serious opposition.

The SuRi’s helicopter touched down on the top of an overlooking hill on the developer’s property. I hiked up the hill to find a can of WD40. That’s what it took to temporarily fix the balky trim button.

One of the helicopter passengers asked about joining me in returning to Auckland. I politely refused. I wasn’t sure of the repair and I didn’t need the extra weight in the airplane. And, I didn’t want to return to the scene of the recent rough takeoff. I flew off alone.
Attachments:

The island parking looked pretty and placid after crossing the rough Hauraki Gulf. Attachments:

Waiheke is sometimes referred to as the Island of Wines because of its renowned vineyards. After a day like this one, there should be some fine Waiheke wine on the dinner menu. The SeaRey splashing seemed to be getting more and more extreme. If I wasn’t all wet yet, it was beginning to seem like just a matter of time. Attachments:
