Description: Waterbird had it's first flight today. A brief 20 minute hop. Jim reports Bitchin Betty talked the whole time. We hope to have that fixed. Other than that, it went well. I also got to taxi it for the first time.

This is a beautiful flying Rey. Got 2.8 hrs on it since yesterday morning's test flight. Light controls - not LSX light, but light. Bitchin Betty is now fixed, had two wires crossed and it was confusing her. This morning flat out with a Warp Drive turning 5600 rpm I saw 107 mph indicated. Stalls non event, gotta love those VG's and Strut plates. Power off no flaps stall at 45 indicated. First notch (manual flaps) was about 42 mph indicated.

Would have loved to fly it more today, but thunderstorms were actually popping north and south of the field by 10 am this morning.

914? I'm making 85 mph at 5500 still air will 100 hp. That is a giant speed difference.

Gotta love that turbo, Ken! But Jim said, 'indicated.' That means everything.

Jim Ratte - May 30,2014 Viewers | Reply
That is correct, 'indicated'. I don't know if its right or not yet, nor do I really care much at this point. Main concern is knowing all the systems are working, no leaks, indicated stall speeds and such.

Don Maxwell - May 30,2014 Viewers | Reply
Ken's speed is probably 'indicated,' too. Or his prop is set for climb.

This might be a good time for a link to my favorite GPS airspeed calculator: http://www.csgnetwork.com/tasgpscalc.html

You can save the page in your iPad or smartphone's browser and use it any time, even offline in the air. Or on your computer.

Enter your heading and GPS speed, turn 90º and enter speed, turn again and enter speed, and you're done. It's most accurate below about 1,000 feet because you don't need to correct for the pressure. (Surely that's not too technical for SnD.)

I'll have to check that out Don. The prop on Dave's plane is a taper tip. Ken's plane is in my shop now, it appears to be a constant chord warp drive.

I should also point out that my full power test was not to see how fast she'd indicate. The purpose was to make sure once the engine was unloaded that the prop pitch was correct.

Russ Garner - May 31,2014 Viewers | Reply
Sorry Jim, how did you unload the engine, roll into a dive and pull it out at the last minute?

Jim Ratte - May 31,2014 Viewers | Reply
Lol, meant checking rpm level flight, rather then tied to the truck
