Description: Seaplanes at the splash-in organized by Helen Woods at the Hyatt on Maryland's eastern shore.

Seven SeaReys together was probably a record for the Mid-Atlantic region.

(This is an iPhone pan shot, which made the relatively straight beach look curved.)

Maybe a non-Florida, non-Canada record gathering of SeaReys?

Don Maxwell - Jul 13,2014 Viewers | Reply
Probably so, Chuck. I think the SeaReyers were Bert Pomilio, Chuck Cavanaugh, Dan Wroe, Helen Woods, Jerry & Phillippa Ratcliffe, Lindsay Trittipoe, Carol & me. But we got there a bit late, so I may have missed some crewmembers.

And for the first time in my life, I got to see a Seawind take off from the water......and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Come one Chuck.....gives us a rundown on the t/o.
First of all, I love the IDEA of the Seawind. Seeing one is what first got me in interested in this whole thing 20+ years ago. I was a little busy making babies, etc and in that time, I realized the Seawind was not for me (for all the reasons you probably already know) and the SeaRey was. I am very happy with my decision.

The Seawind's performance numbers as an airplane that CAN operate on water are indeed impressive. The problem is that - the water. Even the owner, while defending its water capabilities, admitted most Seawind owners never operate on water.....so what is the point?

As far as the t/o? Very long and - although the water was pretty flat - there was a point where I thought I was watching an accident, not a takeoff. It was just......wobbly....at a high speed...and, well, scary. And I hear the same aircraft's departure last year was even more dramatic.

I love the look, I love the numbers, I love the idea.....but I won't fly in one.....at least not on water.

And that take-off was the best one I have seen him do!

But you gotta admit - a darn pretty airplane. Too bad it doesn't fly as good as it looks.

Looks like a great place for a splash in Don.

Don Maxwell - Jul 17,2014 Viewers | Reply
Yes, Helen found a pretty good place, Russ. There were invisible boulders on the bottom and the beach was too soft for taxiing on, but the water was warm and pleasant. And the company of seaplane pilots was excellent.
