How impressive. Not Henderson or North LV but the big dog McCarran! Mixing it up with the jet jocks, must have been interesting for the controllers. They give you any heartburn or was it an enjoyable experience had by all? Oh Wait! Las Vegas, what happens in Vegas ...etc.

The controllers loved it. They were surprised, but we're welcoming. Very great experience!

Good going, Daniel. I've had the same experience with controllers in Class B. They all seemed interested and maybe slightly amused--probably grateful for a break in their heavy routine.

If ATC says ""state your aircraft"" (or similar) and one says SeaRey and they say ""What's a SeaRey""?, what do we do? I seem to recall there is an actual FAA designation for a SeaRey. Anyone recall it?

At Page Field ATC often tells other aircraft to ""Follow the UltraLight on short final"". Ticks me off.
But on initial call up to Ground I use ""Experimental SeaRey 813GP"" and thereafter 3GP and they are happy.
But I think if filing a written or verbal flight plan, the SREY would seem to be the A/C type. Thanks all.

Seems like I remember the proper terminology with contacting ATC is ""experimental (speed class - a, b, or c) 371D. If they ask airplane type, then use SREY. Then follow the terminology they use in further communications. I can't remember nor find the definitions of a, b and c speed class so I may have dreamed that up.

After being asked twice in one trip from Fla to Michigan, I asked Kerry what aircraft designator for Searey. He told me it is SR1. But he had to think about it for a second. My response to ATC was its a Progressive aerodyne Searey amphibian. Seemed to satisfy them.

My favorite comment was from a controller at the Key West Naval Air Base. I requested permission to transition through his airspace. ""what is your current altitude?"" I replied ""8"" ...he said""800 ft"". ""negative. 8 ft!"" He laughed and said ""knock yourself out! You're clear through our airspace over the water direct to Key West.""

Once at an army aircraft maintenance depot in Korea, I happened to hear an L-19 pilot transmit, ""Man in the tower from man in the bird. I've got the power, just give me the word."" The tower guy replied, ""Roger dodger, you old codger. Clear for take off."" They both got crap from the C.O.

-"N639R, Las Vegas Approach, understand you want to land at McCarran? Is that correct?". -"39R, affirmative-parking Atlantic Aviation." -"N39R, you said you are a seaplane? What's the identifier?" ("that's a Searey!" I heard a lady say in the background) -"SREY. Sierra, Romeo, Echo, Yankee" -"N639R, you're following a Southwest 737 on an 18 mile final runway 1L. Report traffic in sight."
The rest is history...
