When Rob arrived on his way home to Maryland from Florida, the tide was dead low--and unusually low, at that. Because we didn't want to risk his getting stuck while en route, we tied him up to a buoy that's always in deep-ish water. I went to pick him up with the "Large Marge Party Barge and Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender" (that's a joke), which you can see in the above photo, tied to the pier. Here he is, ensconced on the Large Marge.

And here's how that low low tide looked from shore:

After a while Ray Meade flew over and decided to land. The tide was coming in by then and the water was considerably higher. His Super Cub has amphibious lloats, but he decided not to try for the beach, as the river had just brought the sand back from its winter hiding place and it was still too soft for the Cub's small wheels.

The tide was back to normal when Rob headed for home, near Baltimore. Here he is getting situated in the cockpit, just before casting off from the buoy.

When Ray went home the tide was about three-quarters full. While helping to turn his Cub around, I lost my grip and took an impromptu swim. That's why there's no photo of Ray departing. My phone, a handheld radio, and several other sparky gizmos went swimming with me. Some of them still work; some are packed in rice. (If I haven't returned your call, now you know why.)
The water (fresh water, by the way) was comfortably warm, though, and all in all it was a beautiful day.

Oops. I cannot recommend LifeProof cases enough to those of us with iPhones. I wade through water as necessary with phone in pocket and don't even think about it anymore. They are essential I think if you are a SeaRey driver and have a$500+ phone.

A quart size ZipLoc storage bag works for brief dunkings. It's easy to swap for a new one also. You can even operate the touch screen through the bag.

I have a really nice dry bag for phones that has a lanyard so you can hang it around your neck. The sides are very clear plastic that doesn't degrade photos. But of course it was in my Searey that time. I also had a ziploc bag in my pocket, but of course the phone wasn't in it. I've thought often of buying a lifeproof case or some other heavy-duty waterproof case. But I can't bring myself to buy one precisely BECAUSE the phone is so expensive. I can't stash the beautiful, sleek, sensuous iPhone in a big, heavy, ugly box. (Yes, yes, of course I had second thoughts when it happened--but it dried out and works just fine now!)

Sorry about the swim and casualties Don. The price of being a perfect host.

It's ALIVE! It's ALIVE! My phone is-- I covered the phone with dry rice in a plastic box, put the lid on tight, and left it in the sun all day yesterday. By evening it was working again. (Mostly just good luck, though.)

Nice to see the Maryland Flag flying back home so we can have some fun flying together. Don- glad to hear your phone survived a seaplane-tending swim. I did a slow fall off a long narrow bridge across a muddy creek on my bike. Faced with the options of trying to speed up for the gyroscopic help from the wheels and risk flying off into steep bank or slowly try to get the center of weight back over the bridge with my up pedal off the side, I did the slow sideways drop into the muddy creek. When I got up there was a big mud blob on my right hip that turned out to be my phone. Immediately pushed the button to turn it off and then dried it in the sun. When I finally went to check if it would turn on it had been on the whole time and worked fine. I guess I just put the screen to sleep. These phones take a lot of abuse and keep working.

It turns out that Carol made a phone video of Ray and me delivering Rob to his Searey with the storied Large Marge Party Barge and Self-Propelled Seaplane Tender.
(I built the barge in one day after red tape discouraged me from building a floating dock, which was going to need permission from several different agencies because of the Chesapeake Bay Act. The barge is titled as a homebuilt boat. No permission needed. License is about $30 for three years. This year the county hit me up for personal property tax of a few extra bucks. The barge works great with Seareys because it's low--just their height--and it's also a perfect dock. The electric trolling motor is silent and the range at full "speed" is about 3 or 4 miles. Sometimes we just toot around our little bay on it, sipping beers or mint julips, watching the sun set or the moon rise.)

I love the L.M.P.B. That's a fine boat. Does it have rubber baby buggy bumpers around it for pulling up close to other vessels?

It doesn't, Mike--but what a great idea! I'll get some pool noodles.

The part the Don left unsaid is that he has to pay an annual VA property tax of about $12 per year for his barge.
