Description:
Rays of sunshine for future aviation gathered under a Searey last week. Aviators all, from Iowa, they were resting from their flying adventures. Mitch, the tall guy to the left, is an instructor at Minnesota State College (Mankato) school of aviation. By his side is Lane, his girlfriend, a senior in aviation at the college. Amy and Jessica are their eager fledglings. They shared a Piper Warrior to complete their cross country instrument flying requirements, flying from the far frigid north to south.
Do you see those blue skies? There were no instruments required, so why not just fly? A Searey? Yes, please. It's educational

Jessica was just twelve when she visited Florida for some Disney time. Instead her aunt took her out to my hangar for a different kind of ride. The shy, demure young girl went along reluctantly. Skimming low over the buffalo, floating with alligators, and circling with the eagles did not elicit one remark. When she left there was barely even the hint of a smile. (But the hint was there! In her eyes.)
Flying is in Jessica's genes. Her mother flew a Piper Warrior when she was a young lady. Having Jessica and her brother ended those days. The accident that ended the life of Jessica's great uncle in a crop duster turned dreams of flight into nightmares.
Her mother's nightmares haven't kept Jessica on the ground. The now young lady is as enthusiastic about flying as any well-grounded Iowan I've met.

First flight for another young man couldn't have been different. He was almost uncontained in his exuberance. Joe is learning the mechanical trades, working on BMW's and Mercedes at an independent shop outside of Boston, turning wrenches to pay the rent. His father, step-son to Col. Grumpy, was in Florida taking care of estate details and Joe came along to help. As you can see from the photo, he is now truly infected with the flying virus. Who knows where he will go from here? Will he be the one to keep Col. Grumpy's Up Thang in the air? There is hope out there for future flyers.

They all look like great Searey fans, Dan. Did you give them a ""Kerry"" ride? (Not that that's needed for an into to Searey flying.)

Negative, Don. It was the kind of ride that pushed boundaries for young professional aviators, not jaded adrenaline junkies!
