Stromatolites
John - Stromatolites = Probably the oldest still living life form on earth - they are present in the fossil record for more than 3
Billion years but are rare now. Modern Stromatolites are mostly found in hyper saline lakes and marine lagoons where extreme
conditions due to high saline levels exclude animal grazing. One of the best know example is Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve,
Shark Bay in Western Australia.

Dan = Yes I saw heaps of Stromatolites, then a bit further on I spotted another group which I thought were Stromatolites until
one of them stuck its head above water and I realised they were giant turtles, at least 50 of them just slowly cruising along in
the crystal clear water which was only a few feet deep and with a beautiful sandy bottom. The picture is of the southern
extremity of the Freycinet Estuary (26deg 33min S 113deg 47E) (beside Hamelin Pool). Dan you would love the coast of
Australia – such variety. Mark 13 Nov 2012 in your diary – Total eclipse of the sun in Australia – I will be leading a Seaplane
expedition to experience it from the solitude of the west coast of Australia’s Cape York.
High on my list of things to do, Ross, is to stroll among the stromatolites. (I'm not sure it would be such a good idea in the dark...as when there is an eclipse, but it would be unique!) I can't wait to join you in some west coast SeaReying.

Ya gotta respect one of your oldest ancestors, mate. They likely caused one of the biggest climate changes in earth's history by adding oxygen. When you stroll among the stromatolites, you're looking back billions of years. These humble creatures changed a planet one microbe at a time. Where else can you see so far by just looking down?
