Go figure! 20 yrs with them, 500 hrs in type, instrument rated and the new kid gets a lower quote! It pays to be pretty

David Mazer - Jul 17,2010 Viewers | Reply
So Daniel, what are the specifics on your policy since yours seems to be the lowest,
including passengers?

John Spratt - Jul 15,2010 Viewers | Reply
Avemco, $321 for liability only. They don't cover passengers in experimental aircraft.

Tom Binsfeld - Jul 15,2010 Viewers | Reply
Last year was $938.00, Falcon told me they raised rates on the SeaRey.

Wenk Insurance, $1100. Virginia has some different liability requirements though.

Falcon - $1597 for 60,000 not in motion hull insurance and 1,000,000 liability I just feel better when the plane is anchored or parked when traveling.

Why not set up an LLC for your plane?

Eric Batterman - Jul 16,2010 Viewers | Reply
LLCs for liability protection probably won't work, especially if the owner is the pilot:

http://www.avweb.com/news/avlaw/181898-1.html

They are a good idea for aircraft partnerships.

    $4,400; one mil$, everything...Hull, passenger and liability.

US Specialty thru Falcon. Great groups. Easy to work with.

Hey! You would too if you lived in LA!

Eric Batterman - Jul 16,2010 Viewers | Reply
Tom, That is with $100k per pax limit?

There is only one underwriter who will insure Searey aircraft, US Specialty Ins Co. in Dallas, TX. Falcon Insurance Agency in Lakeland, FL is the premier provider of insurance services to the Seaplane Pilots Association and are the 'go to' agency for obtaining insurance through US Specialty. Other agencies can obtain policies through US Spec, but Falcon is a preferred provider. Likewise CaptainSpeak, my training company, is a preferred training provider for US Specialty in Searey aircraft and the underwriters there usually lower training requirements to acheive qualification status to effect your policy, depending on previous experience.
The underwriters at US Specialty always require a seaplane rating and at least 25 takeoff and landings in Seareys with a tailwheel endorsement. How many hours that takes to meet this requirement is up to them based on your hours and currency.
The amount of insurance obtained is in three categories- Liability, Hull and Not-in-Motion. The liability is quoted as $100K per passenger per occurance and $1M total. the Hull is based on a stated value that you provide - it's what you'd want them to pay you if it was totally damaged. The N.I.M. coverage is for Acts of God like the ones we have here in Central Florida - wind and hail and lions and tigers and bears, ya know...
Typically, the premiums for full coverage, ie: Hull, Liability and NIM are huge! I've heard between $5K and $7500 per year- OUCH. NIM and Liability can be between $2400 and #3700 and good ol' Liability is between $1200 and $1600.
I'm not sure how some of you guys got better than those quotes, but make sure we all compare apples to apples because any change in levels of liability, hull stated amounts and locations, hangered, competed/not completed etc..all change the equation.
Call Ken Bryce at Falcon Insurance 863-646-9688 for more information.

There has been some news that Avemco is now quoting policies but it's slightly different than US Specialty. The third party liability is for coverage against others but does not include any passenger - and never included the pilot anyway. The limit was $100K per person up to the policy limit, usually $1M. This is different than US Specialty in a very important way. Purportedly it doesn't cover the guests we are trying to share our passion with as passengers. I'll try to get more information because this would give us another option.

When I began water ops I opted to talk to Falcon about adding 'In Motion' hull
insurance to my policy. Given my situation (age, hours, experience or
inexperience, etc.) they surprisingly offered me coverage with about a 50%
increase over my not-in-motion premium. Annual premium now is $3108
which is lower than Tom White's, presumably because Fl is not LA. Hull
value is listed at $60K, and there's a hefty deductible (I forget, but like $4K).
Includes liability, ea passenger at $100K, i.e, the standard stuff, same as my
Piper.

    Charles,

USSIC has declined to lower your renewal premium. USSIC further advised that number of pilots, pilot hours, etc can cause the premiums to vary between insureds.

They consider your rate to be accurate based on the number of pilots and flying hours on your aircraft.

Regret that I could not secure a lower rate for you.

Kindest regards,

Baxter L. Allen
Sr. Vice President
Falcon Insurance Agency, Inc.

When they got you they can twist

Thomas Alexander Bowden - Jul 21,2010 Viewers | Reply
Do they mean number of flying hours on all Seareys and number of pilots flying Seareys? or number of pilots flying your Searey and number of hours you have flown your Searey?

Charles Pickett - Jul 22,2010 Viewers | Reply
    Not sure I will ask

I just acquired insurance on my SeaRey. Liability only, Avemco quoted $571 and Falcon quoted $1300.

However, from what I understood in talking to the agents, there is a big difference in the coverage.

Falcon covers up to $1 million, with a limit of $100K per person, including a passenger.

Avemco covers up to $1 million, with a limit of $100K per person and $100K limit property and does not include a passenger. The big difference (aside from the passenger) is if you have an accident that causes someone's $1 million house to catch fire, Falcon covers the whole cost and Avemco would leave you with a $900K bill.

If you don't fly near expensive property and aren't concerned about passenger insurance, Avemco looks like a good deal.
