Good one, Russ.<br /><br />I was on the beach (Jordan Point on the James River east of Hopewell, about 60 or 70 miles from the epicenter), preflighting my SeaRey and talking on the phone with a friend in Richmond when he suddenly said, 'Holy shit!' and just then the wings started rocking, the tips moving up and down about 5 or 6 inches. It sounded like a distant heavy freight train, but with no particular direction. I felt a vibration in my feet--standing on dry sand--and could hear crockery rattling in my friend's house over the phone. I didn't notice any disturbance in the water. Very interesting experience. It lasted about 30 seconds here, but my friend on the phone said it was still moving things there for another 15 seconds or so. No apparent damage here. Carol was in the house and didn't even notice it.

Guess I get the closest to the epicenter prize on this one, about 2 miles away. All the cupboards and cabinets and shelves emptied themselves onto the floor, pictures and wall hangings as well. A few small foundation cracks but no major damage and no injuries here. It was my first earthquake experience and we have had several more smaller ones/aftershocks since then. It reminded me of being in the Pentagon on 9/11, just 400 ft from the airplane impact. At least the first few seconds. Aircraft, boats and hangar all fared well.

Glad to know you're okay, Bill. I tried to phone you about half an hour after the quake and again a little later, but couldn't get a connection. How's the dam--and the power plant?<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or &gt; missing in user HTML. Please fix the HTML.</font> -->

The reactors automatically shut down in an earthquake so they are in good shape. I flew over the dam last night and it was still intact and there was a distinct lack of activity so I guess everything is OK with it.

Don, I know you were thinking it's about time to go through and clean those cupboards out anyway. So you just had a bit of help!. We felt it here too. Tina felt motion sickness in her office!
