Managed to sneak away from entertaining the mother-in-law on Sunday for an hour. Dropped into Havre de Grace (MD6) at low tide, which was a bit of a mistake. Not recommended at low water (more on that later perhaps). After that I treated myself to a skim around the shore, followed by a landing back home. Later checked logbook and that was landing number 1000 for me (not all in SeaReys of course). Glad I didn't screw it up!The five minute video is a little long because as a college prof, I give my students a break in long classes for five minutes, so I use videos with a timer superimposed on the video to keep them honest and so breaks don't last 15 minutes. Don't have the time to cut this down, but do enjoy a five minute jaunt around the top end of Chesapeake Bay.

    Jerry,
Looks like a nice place to explore. Since there looks to be a growing Searey group in MD, how about you
guys down there set up a fly-in. Not too far for us in the New England area to take a trip to. I'm sure Don and
a few others could be persuaded to come up from the south too.

Great Searey fun on the Cheasapeake. Nice video, Jerry. Hoped to meet you at Helen's open house at CSP a few weeks ago. Been enjoying your videos. Will be joining you in a Searey on the Cheasapeake soon. I will be based out of St Mary's airport near Solomons Island where the Patuxent River flows into the Cheasapeake.

Alas not a SeaRey adventure. Have the mother-in-law in tow, so we are taking a C177 Cardinal from
W29.

While reviewing my logs this morning ran across the following notes from my first flight to Tangier Island in my first plane a 1956 straight tail C-172 that was our flying camper. With the back seat out there was room for a cooler and two full sized bicycles- room to sleep in the tail in bad weather or when didn't want to be obvious camping at large airfields on cross country adventures. My copilot wife wrote the following in our flight log: "26Jan83 Shannon - Tangier 1.50 landing fee (didn't charge the air taxi, though!) long Beach for camping. has a shipwreck on the island beach. CAMPING good place!"

Yes, there are number of us Chesapeake Bay SeaRey flyers. Besides Jerry, there is me at W48, Don Maxwell at the TAJ, Chuck Cavanaugh in NJ, and Helen at W29.

The Bay region and the Delmarva are a great place for the low flying SeaRey to play in and explore. There are a number of fine '$100 lunch stops' to be had. See teh URL link to a private Google map I maintain.

Here are some pictures of the region.
Attachments:

There's also Lindsay Trittipoe in Richmond, and Buck Bray (PAX River) picks up his brand new SeaRey next week. Has anyone heard from Mike Botsaris recently?

I noticed that your "Future base for Rob's MD SeaRay" will be very close to my "Future base for Buck's MD SeaRey" Will hangar it at St Mary's airport and putting together a small floating U dock for nice days in front of my house near Clark's Landing.

Will do Jerry - we saw you at KMTN a couple of weeks ago but you were just taxiing out to 15 for departure and we were leaving the field for the day so we couldn't catch up with you. If you get back up here give us a shout. We have an end hangar and plenty of space to park right next to it. They also have a nice wash rack at KMTN and we have all of the cleaning essentials if you want to stop in and give your bird a bath.

I would like to see your dock - never made it last year despite your generous offers.

Damn - sorry we missed you, though the $19 landing/ramp fee was a bit of a shocker and a dampener on our enthusiasm to return... Can you avoid the fee somehow? And the chance to really wash Nellie would be great! Never really get the opportunity what with the wings hanging out off the floating dock at our place. She needs a good rub down (fnarr fnarr).

Didn't know about the ramp fee - next time when they tell you to taxi to
park just come on around next to
our hangar T175 and park right next to it out of the way. I have had
others do it and no one has said
anything and the FBO can't see you where we are.

Robert Charlwood Richardson - Jun 03,2014 Viewers | Reply
Jerry, Come on over to Essex for a wash. We have a hose next to our fuel pad. Or you can use my hose. I have all the necessary cleaning stuff. But be advised that we use well water and its iron in it. The other option is to wash your plane at Cambridge (KCGE). Their wash rack is down next to the Rotax dealer.

Mike, I'm still in the planning stage on a docking arrangement and like you have been scouring for ideas. Buck, see the first 10 seconds, and the last 30 seconds of this video, for the floating dock we have. Cost about $6k to include when we built our dock. Not saying it would be better or worse than an EZ Dock, but the guy is local and good to work with. An option for you.

Mike, I also have deep water and a steep bank to the house. I am interested to see EZDock possibilities, but the photos I have seen with EZDocks looked less than practical. They appeared to have floatation sides too high out of the water to easily get the main wheels over in the up position. Additionally it looked as if the winch on the nose was necessary to hold the nose down since the aircraft c.g. is near the step and even with precise positioning of the step relative to a set of rollers the moment between the rollers and the c.g. would be small. Don't know if my observations/analysis from photos is accurate and that is why I am interested in actual experience and a demonstration of EZDock possibilities. I have purchased some connect-a-dock components to experiment with U-shaped dock possibilities. The ones I purchased are only 10" deep with a 8" floating freeboard and are used for crew teams, swimming platforms etc. Another advantage of the connect a dock components is they look very portable and will not be permanently attached to a dock so I could anchor it out enabling docking into the wind. Thought I would put some fenders in the U and just taxi in and the free movement of the dock would absorb any docking bumps.

Mike Botsaris - Jun 05,2014 Viewers | Reply
Buck - what brand/type of floating dock are you thinking of? web site?. I think a low
freeboard is important and like Don says - the longer the better...

Buck Bray - Jun 05,2014 Viewers | Reply
Mike, http://www.connectadock.com/dock/1000Series/connectADock1000Series.htmI bought my dock sections/components through a gentleman at Reedville Marina, VA who has used the 2000 series for years for boats and is a distributor. Said they have been very stable when subjected to large boat wakes from inconsiderate weekend boaters. Had them shipped right to my house. I can provide contact info or you could pick a distributor closer to you. They seem well made and easily configureable so I can experiment. The sections I got are 60" by 45" and weigh around 86 pounds so are easy to carry down the hill and assemble. Just haven't found the time yet. Was thinking of mooring a small U dock that in light winds I could tie to my pier. More expensive than wood construction, but more flexible and appears to have a longer life.

I did not know that you had brought your airplane up to MD. I normally fly on the weekend. I was over at Bay Bridge (W29) last Saturday with my Annapolis EAA chapter doing Eagle Flight for 80 Boy Scouts. (see the quick video I did of one of the 15 min flights. not the best landing). I normally do a local fly-in, or a 2hr trip out one of the compass headings, or play up & down the Chester River above Chestertown on the eastern Shore. No salt water and light boat traffic. If the weather is nice this Saturday, I should be up @11AM. I'm thinking of videoing my Balt Harbor tour, then playing over in the Chester. If I see Jerry's plane as I fly over, I might drop in onto his creek for a visit.

By the way, if you get tired of Martin's bureaucracy and no MX in the hangar rules, we are rebuilding 3 hangars at Essex and two of them will be available for rent sometime in late July/August. I owe teh rights to one of them. Attachments:

Nice job on the video, Rob--very informative. The kid seemed to be enjoying the ride.

What's your thought about water ops on a Young Eagle flight? The EAA guys in Richmond had never considered it, the last time I asked them.

Robert Charlwood Richardson - Jun 03,2014 Viewers | Reply
I never thought to ask. Besides, the winds were too strong (8 gust to 13) and there wasn't really a place around W29 to work in a quick splash and go. Kent Narrows is one of the nine places in MD that MD aviation law prohibits water ops.

Yes, but Potomac Approach has no problem with us doing water landings in the Severn River. I fact I did one last Saturday. If you are looking to land and beach at the USNA, then Chuck Cavanaugh did it last Fall to attend the USAFA-USNA football game. I think he did a MyFamily posting of the event.
