I'll be lucky if I can bring myself, Rolf. Let me know what else I can do to help if I get that lucky.

Hey Rolf; I won't be there this year by land or sea ---due to obligations to entertain a bunch of family visiting that week---it's a bummer, but do have to keep my lady happy (usually)

Tom Lansing - Jul 15,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Gee I hope I can figure out what day Thursday is, Time? I went last year but saw no activities so I just hung out. I am going (to Osh) via eaa44 airlift (Rochester, NY) so will bus over. Time???

Rolf,<br /><br />I work as a boat driver and general helper at the seaplane base, so will be in the area on Thursday.<br /><br />I'll have a vehicle, so if you need anything that can be brought from surrounding area, let me know.<br /><br />Gene Hammond

Doug and I can bring some stuff in our Reys (buns and condiments would be light but let me know. Do you think US customs would approve a gallon of wine?

I had planned on going, but Just found out I have to do another job in Japan. Do not think I will be back in time. If for some reason I can make it, I will be glad to help and pitch in money.

Darrell Lynds - Jul 16,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Linda, Mike and I will be there. Will bring bean salads and such to complement the brats.

Jim S: We'll miss you. Is Roy coming?<br />Don: Just be lucky and come as you are!<br />Tom: Thursday 7-29 at the seaplane base RV parking area anytime after 5:30 central. Busses run from the south end of the runway just beyond the ultralight field.<br />Bill: See ya there. No baked beans this year???<br />Gene: That is a great offer, we will see you there.<br />Darrell: We are tenting this year so an RV with hot coffee in the AM will be super. Kirk is working in CA for the summer. Too bad, he and Mike could keep an eye on us.<br />Robert: Work fast so you can get back by Thursday.<br />John and Doug: Don't waste useful load, there are many markets locally and several of us will have vehicles. What route are you taking? If through Manitoulin to Drummond Island you may wish to come by this area on your return. Not much out of the way, and Lake Superior is only 20 miles from my base.

Thanks Rolf! Doug and I may be a bit tight on time as our FAA no-transponder waiver runs out on the 31st and his August work schedule may also interfere. We'll talk it over and get back to you..

Don Maxwell - Jul 18,2004   Viewers  | Reply
John, if you're part of a flight of airplanes, does every airplane need a transponder? (I don't know, but have a hazy notion that only one does.)

John Robert Dunlop - Jul 18,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Good question Don, don't know. I also was not certain if we could file a VFR flight plan as a formation for entering the US. As to the transponders, neither of us have one yet but plan to install them next winter for our foray to Florida next spring..

Don Maxwell - Jul 18,2004   Viewers  | Reply
I don't see a problem in the US as long as you stay VFR and keep away from Class B and C airspace. Or am I missing something?

John Robert Dunlop - Jul 18,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Yup! Canadians cannot cross the border without a Mode C transponder (unless they have a waiver.)

Rolf Anderson - Jul 18,2004   Viewers  | Reply
John: We crossed both ways to your gaggle with a flight of 4 (3 US and Darrell-we don't know where he came from) and were told to only operate one xpondr. Of course ONE was required which doesn't help you in this case. BRILLIANT SUGGESTION. Buy appropriate pieces at OSH ane we will install here b4 you return home. Might even save some taxes.

Don Maxwell - Jul 19,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Rolf has the best idea, John. Also: cannot cross the border <I>in which direction</I>? If it's IN, your waiver covers that. If it's OUT, then maybe you merely need an escort.<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or &gt; missing in user HTML. Please fix the HTML.</font> -->

Rolf &amp; Don, both Doug and I already have purchased transponder antennas and ACK-30 encoders. We were planning to get the Microair transponder because of its small size and weight. In fact, Doug already has a cutout on his panel ready for it. I'll talk it over with him today.<br />And yes, the transponder is required both directions. And I think the letter of the law would require both aircraft to have one even if ATC requested that only one be in operation..

Don Maxwell - Jul 19,2004   Viewers  | Reply
John, I have the Microair transponder and am pleased with it. It's small and light and works just fine. It also has some extra features, such as an audio output (which I don't use) and a pressure altutude display (which I do use sometimes). There's also a button to change immediately to 1200. The only thing that might bother some people is that there's only one knob to set the code. You have to press it in to move from one digit to the next. Four separate knobs is more intuitive, but you quickly get used to pressing and turning. Then you press another button to swap the new code with the old.

John,<br /><br />I recently had a transponder installed in 5003G. The installer built an antenna stand inside the nose on a flat piece of aluminum which is used as a ground plane withthe antenna facing down. They work better that way.<br /><br />Gene Hammond

John Robert Dunlop - Jul 22,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Thanks Gene, I have the aluminum plate already cut!

Darrell Lynds - Jul 19,2004   Viewers  | Reply
John. I am pretty sure the transponder requirement is waived during OSH. There are just too many expermintals that don't have them. It's worth checking the OSH notam. Might save you some hassle.

John Robert Dunlop - Jul 19,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Darrell, it was the Oshkosk Notam that alerted me to the transponder requirement. ie.<br /><br />'Experimental amateur-built aircraft and ultralight aircraft registered in Canada do not need the waiver if they can comply with the terms of the current border crossing NOTAM (2/5319) and the FAA Canadian ultralight and amateur-built aircraft border crossing Special Flight Authorization (SFA).'<br /><br />So now you get to read the appropriate part of NOTAM 2/5319:<br /><br /> 4. THE PILOT IS IN COMMUNICATION WITH THE GOVERNING ATC FACILITY AT THE TIME OF THE BOUNDARY CROSSING. 5. THE AIRCRAFT IS SQUAWKING AN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL ASSIGNED DISCRETE BEACON CODE.

Don Maxwell - Jul 19,2004   Viewers  | Reply
John, why don't you just step-taxi across the border? I doubt that boats need transponders.

John Robert Dunlop - Jul 20,2004   Viewers  | Reply
    Huh?!!

Dan Nickens - Jul 20,2004   Viewers  | Reply
Brilliant, Don! I heard there are some Gaggle Veterans that have a lot of experience in extended cross country step taxi.

The new question is, Who holds the record for the longest Great Lake displacement taxi in a SeaRey? (Hint: it may be a tie.)

Dan Nickens - Aug 07,2004   Viewers  | Reply
That ain't gonna cut it, Don. We need documentation. Start typing.

John<br />How did you get your waiver, and did it cost? I called up FSS in Washington (state) about getting a waiver to go to local show but no one had any idea and I got pointed in all sorts of wrong directions.<br /><br />I also called local FSS in Kamloops and was told that a transponder was not actually legally required for crossing back into Canada.
