I'm starting to plan my route from RI to TN and wondered if anyone had suggestions as to the best area to cross through the mountains, places to see, good little airports etc...

I plan to fly the Husdon River vfr corridor by New York City and then I'll probably start heading inland. Starting airport id is SFZ in Rhode Island. Destination id is M91 in Springfield, TN. Any info would be appreciated. I plan to leave this Saturday if weather allows.

Thanks,
-Bret

Bret, you might consider stopping at either Fairmont Regional (4G7) http://www.airnav.com/airport/4G7 in Fairmont, WV, or Gallia-Meigs Regional (GAS) http://www.airnav.com/airport/gas in Galliopolis, OH. (Pronounced 'gal uh puh LEESE.')

Both have restaurants across the street.. Fairmont also has a car gas station and a motel, both a short walk from the ramp.

Summersville, WV, (SXL) is near a good-sized lake and looks attractive on a chart, but is not on the water and is about 5 miles from town. But the kind airport lady fed me along with her kids and another guy once, when I happened to be there at lunchtime.

The mountains are relatively easy to cross a little north of a line between Winchester, VA and Fairmont--north of the Mt. Storm power station. (But stay clear of Camp David east of there!) They rise a little higher to the south, but if you can do 6500' you should be okay anywhere. I think the highest elevation east of the Rockies is something like 5500'. So heading west, 6500' is safe. But I'd make sure I could do 8500' in case there are low clouds on the peaks.

Head south along the Atlantic beaches. Turn inland at Daytona. RON at X61 with friends. Head west to the Gulf. Follow the beach north west and turn inland at The Miss. River. Follow the river north to St Louis. Turn right at the arch. Head East until you see the Smoky Mountains. Stop before you get to them and you are in East Tenn.
Have a great trip!

Now this is what I call the scenic route!!

Brett, If you follow I-81 and I-40, then you will not cross any mountain ranges. Stop by Claytor Lake and I can facilitate Avgas, food and lodging if desired. (37.073N, 80.611W). We are leaving for the beach on Sunday, but my buddy, Dennis and his family will be house sitting in our absense (7 huskies). Dennis is a jet-ski buddy and loves to fly the Searey (as a passenger). He will surely be more than happy to run you up to the gas station if you arrive after we leave.

Jon's route is best! On the other hand, you could go west and stop at the Edwards' on Lake Ontario, drop in on the other guys in the Toronto area, head for Rolf's place in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, work your way down the Mississippi to St. Louis and then east as Jon suggested.

And don't forget the downwind route--to England, the Bering Strait, and approach St. Louis from the west.

Turn right after the hudson and stop at 39N (Princeton, NJ) and lunch is on me. I'm around until 1:00 PM. I would go great circle route the other way 'round (initial heading NE ).

Thats some great info/suggestions/offers... I agree Jon's route is best but he'd have to fly up here first to lead the way. Meet me at Princeton Jon and we'll make Eric buy us both lunch then I'll be on your wing the rest of the way... Don, you want to join us. Eric is buying

I'm gonna lay out the maps tonight and I'll get back to you. THANKS!

Since my car only has 2 seats, I'll be happy to feed the vending machine for the rest of the gang. 8 synthetic orange peanut butter crackers coming up!

Its looking like Jeff's 81 to 40 is appealing to us the most. That route looks real nice. Thanks Jeff! Eric, we still have some stuff to do (and the rain...) so a Saturday afternoon departure is our earliest... Sunday is most likely.

Bret, have a safe enjoyable trip. I promise to not SHOOT at you when you pass over. Do a fly by if you get that close enough.

Hey guys, we made it safe and sound arriving last night at Weakley Field right at sunset. A wheels up fly-by brought out the neighbors and we landed with smiles and waves from all the good folk of Weakley airpark... all 4 of them My family was also there to greet us. Cell phone calls from 2,500 ft helped coordinate our arrival... not from the plane of course thats like illegal or against a FAR or dangerous to aircraft or against cell phone company policy or cuts into their profits or something.

Jeff, your route down the Shannondoah Valley was most gorgeous! We left tuesday from RI at about noon... screwed around trying to make a go/no-go decision for the third day in a row. Blustery in New England but better conditions and winds to the west of NY. PiReps were good, the local flying school had students up, so we decided to get in the air and see how it was and decide from there. Winds gusting 12 to 20 when we left. My cousin passenger doped up on Dramamine, had the pressure point bands on, plus that electric shock band thing... he was prepared!

All was good. Bouncy but not terrible. Hudson River was AWESOME but I was earning my keep as a pilot. The plane was (trying to be) all over the place so I was working. Passenger was too enthralled with the sights to get sick.

Stopped in Princeton for fuel and a pee break... where the hell was Eric???? We were hungry! Then on to light winds and great weather Frederick, MD. Clark's (my cousin's) daughter came up from DC to meet us for dinner. Had a hoot telling stories over dinner.

Forecast for Wed was sever clear for the whole route but Thurs. promised weather in TN so we had to hammer! Flew the valley to Knoxville and then west to Weakley field NW of Nashville. AWESOME day of mountain flying at or below 3,500 ft. Flew the valleys and scraped the tops.... the stuff of flying dreams!

More later... I have to borrow compter time here in TN. Will post pics later. Thanks for all the help. Thunder and lightening here today. Glad the forecast was right cause I hated hurrying. Would have enjoyed lolligagging a little more but no complaints... IT WAS A GREAT TRIP. STREAKER IS IN TENNESSEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on the successful relocation. Had I known you were coming Tues I would have baked... (I was home building)

Jeff Arnold - May 25,2006 Viewers | Reply
Glad to hear of your great trip Brett. Is Streaker in TN for good or are you heading back? Where did you stop in VA? Looking forward to the pix. Sorry I missed you. Maybe I'll just have to drop down to TN for a visit.

Bret Smith - May 26,2006 Viewers | Reply
Yea Jeff, Streaker is home for keeps. That was the point of the trip, to move her down to TN. I'll be here (TN) for a week or so to do some work on our temporary living accomodations (pronounced 'trailer') and then I'm heading back to RI for the big pack and move. Our RI house sells on July 1 and the family and I will be down here in TN permanently by mid July.

FYI - I had the foresight to ship my suit down here before I left which is good because I got a call while enroute about a teaching gig I've been angling for. The suit arrived yesterday, the meeting with the headmaster is this morning. Keep fingers crossed for me. This is THE place I have been hoping get a teaching job. It would be nice to get future employment settled on this trip! The move to-do list is long but we're chipping away...

    Hi Brett,

You make every trip a flying great experience(as a good pilot should). Guess I will have to come to TN for my Rey ride. Hope you get the job and everything continues to go smooth for your family.

Bret Smith - May 26,2006 Viewers | Reply
Thanks Vic and I haven't forgotten about you. I called Charlie Pickett before I left and asked if his SeaRey would be available for your joy ride when I returned. He's said that would be fine and dandy.

How did the interview go Bret?

Charlie Huskey - May 26,2006 Viewers | Reply
Best of luck on the job Bret. By the way, were you between Knoxville and Crossville about 1:30 eastern time the day you came down. It sure sounded like like a Rotax and it was about 3500 to 4000 ft.
Grading started today on the runway extension, if rain lets up hope to be sewing grass seed in a couple weeks.

Charle that was probably me. I was looking for your place on the ridgetops... I figured it was nearby.

All set Jon!!!! Yaaaaayyyyyyyyy! Reporting to duty in August. I'll be teaching 7th, 8th, and 9th grade math. The school, Clarksville Academy, is pre-k through 12 so the kids will also be going to school there too. We're pretty happy about it!

Does Tennessee have a lottery, Bret? Maybe you should consider playing....it looks like your stars are all aligned! Congratulations!

    Brett,

Thank you. I will indeed look forward. Sold my Cherokee this week. Will maintain proficiency in a 172 while getting taildragger time in a Cub at famous/infamous Hampton Airfield. Please keep me posted. Rember too, they fly by moonshine in TN.

For a somewhat different account of flying in The States, there's this http://flyingxtc.blogspot.com/ by an Australian trike pilot. I guess it's relevant to S&D because somewhere in it there's a link to a video of a trike coming a cropper on glassy water.
