MORRIS -- A local boater who repeatedly swerved in front of a floatplane on Bantam Lake to prevent it from taking off was arrested on a warrant Sunday, authorities said.

The floatplane was giving rides to campers from inner-city neighborhoods who attended nearby Camp Hope. The pilot and owner of the plane has been donating rides to the two top 'campers of the week' for many years, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection, whose officers made the arrest.

On Aug. 4, the pilot was attempting to take off with two girls aged 12 and 13 when a boat operated by Edward Kurtz of Morris pulled in front of the plane and stopped, state officials said.

The pilot, a Winsted resident whom state officials did not name, was forced to abort the takeoff. After being cut off by the boat a second time, the pilot returned to the dock and dropped the campers off because he feared for their safety, state officials said.

The boat attempt to cut off the floatplane a third time, but it managed to get airborne. Witnesses said the boat came close to striking the floats, state officials said.

Hurtz admitted to DEP police officers that he pulled into the flight path of the floatplane to prevent it taking off because he believed it was illegal for such aircraft to operate on Bantam Lake, state officials said. There is no such prohibition, officials said.

Kurtz, of 48 Marsh Point Road, resisted arrest on Sunday and had to be physically subdued by DEP officers, state officials said. He was charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor, three counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, three counts of second-degree reckless boating, and interfering with an officer. He was being held with bail set at $35,000 and is scheduled to appear today in Superior Court in Bantam.

Contact Carolyn Moreau at cmoreau@courant.com.

Yup, the same thing happened to me. While attempting to take off a bunch of girls started waving, we were so busy looking take off was impossible.

I guess we all have our war story. My most scary one was landing in the Aventura, with my wife watching from the dock, with an idiot on a jet ski directly under me. Of course I couldn't see him and didn't know he was there. Barbara said it was so close she thought I had hit him before he veered off at the last second.

Dave, I guess you came through your ordeal OK. But I'm sure it's left you scared for life.

Dennis, John, etc, don't forget there is a huge new tower at the north finger at Conestoga lake. If you are following the river north you'll run right into it.

Thanks Dave. But don't worry, it can only happen once.

Jon, there are a lot of idiots out there. Not all of them are in boats. Hopefully, we learn from the mistakes of others.

I'm sure we've all had an experience of some sort (but not like Daves). I've had one guy with two small boys in a jet boat chase me up and down Lake Conestoga. Darn thing was faster than me in the air! I'm sure it was just an attempt to let his boys get a closer look at this cool thing. Eventually I just gave up and just went elsewhere. But he had no clue of the danger he was exposing everyone to.

I guess typing was not one of my better subjects. But then, when one is bipolar, just the thought is what counts.
