A gorgeous afternoon, so good pal and next-door neighbour, Andrew, came along as the commentator and camera man for an hour of water landings in Lake Ontario. Conditions were quite varied. At the airport, a fitful 5-10 knot variable wind was blowing (60 degrees across the runway). On the Lake, the winds varied from 2 to 4 knots at Grimsby while the western end of the lake (at Hamilton) provided a nice 10 knot breeze. A sloppy swell, left over from the past two day's storms, created one foot high swells.

We made 6 water landings/takeoffs. Loads of fun!!

To see the video of our afternoon's fun, try the following URL on You tube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZSeLR_oE_0

Hope it works

The beautiful high definition material sure takes a pounding when one processes it for You tube. If any of you are aware of how I can imporve the imagery and resolution, let me know.

Best,
Larry
Larry, First off, great video!

Now, there's nothing you can do about the pounding the video takes when it gets dumbed down from HD to YouTube. You're going from an image size of about 1440x1080 to an image size of 320x240. If you do the math, you'll cry. Don't put yourself through that.

I have one very simple suggestion for you though and once you do this, you'll never go back. Go out and get a wide-angle lens for your HD camera, or even a fisheye lens which is even wider. Wide angle lenses will double the view within the frame regardless of the resolution.

Whenever shooting in close quarters like an airplane cockpit, the normal zoom lens that comes with the camera just can't pull out wide enough to show the story. With a fisheye, you can see so much more. Here's a link to one.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/312663-REG/Sony_VCL062
5S_VCL_0625S_25mm_0_6x_Wide.html

I use this one too:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/232570-REG/Kenko_SGW04
3_SGW_043_37mm_0_43x_Wide_Angle.html

You need to make sure that you get the right size lens for your camera, my Sony HD has a lens mount of 37mm. It will say in the manual or take it to a camera store and fit the lens to it.

When I'm shooting video for The Searey Chronicles (or for anyone else), I'll be constantly taking the fisheye lens on and off depending on the shot. I put the lens on when I'm shooting cockpit closeups and panoramic horizon shots. I take the lens off to zoom in on another plane flying in formation or if I'm on the ground shooting another plane landing. I think the lens makes the shot.

Enjoy the higher resolution on your plasma at home and still dumb it down for the YouTube viewers, but you can still put much more into the frame you make with a wider lens.
Hi Steve:

Many, many thanks for the nifty advice. I really appreciate it. I will visit a camera shop right after Oshkosh.

I am also using a Sony HD. Which model do you prefer?

By the way, the material you have provided in the SeaRey Chronicles is simply superb!!

Best,
Larry

Any Sony camera is fine with me. It's pretty much the only brand I buy anymore. But you can get different lenses from other companies that fit any Sony camera.
