Here's another 'Wheel' video, this one of a glassy-water landing and takeoff on the James River, a few miles upstream from Jamestown Island (John Smith and Pocahontas--that place).

I had two cameras rolling, one on the fin and the other on top of the glareshield to get a wide shot of what was ahead. But alas! I inadvertently put that one on almost full zoom and pointing slightly downward, so almost all of its footage was useless. I stuck in a few short clips, but didn't fuss with the transitions. They're ugly. The music track is just for Dave Lima, because I know how much he likes it.

The beach belongs to my friend, Tommy Crump, a champion hang glider pilot. That's his Christmas tree out in the water, with a long extension cord for the lights.

One scene in the second half might be puzzling: it's the mag check at 4,000 rpm.

(20.5 MB)

That music is so old, I was waiting for Laurel and Hardy to jump out of the plane! But not to sound ungrateful, I did enjoy the video. We'll have you converted to something a little heavier after the Gaggle.

Dave, it just adds a touch of class.

Very nice Don. You're having way too much fun. Wish I could dig mine out!

    Don,
I hope ypu dont mind, I messed up your video. I'm experimenting with a new video editing program.
Dave, see if you like this one better.

I can't seem to get as good a quality with low file size as with theold proggie, but this one is only about 10 megs.

Nice try, Tony. I especially like the color inversions.

But really! It's a GLASSY-water landing! You want music that's smooth and calm and easy, to reflect the quality of the watery mirror beneath, not something to back a WWW match or a demolition derby.

Like this example--soothing smoothing sensual, soft as thighskin.
Attachments:

    Oooh. I like that.

ps

I noticed you panned on your still shot.

Don Maxwell - Feb 06,2008 Viewers | Reply
Well, you panned on it, Tony, so I had to counter. I thought about doing it the first time, but was so disappointed with the zoom problem in the forward camera that I didn't feel like taking any pains with the thing. In my mind the video is more about Tommy than the tree, even though that amuses me no end. It's typical of him. The only forward footage I put in strikes me as impressionistic--almost surreal--and I think that suits Tommy, too.

The music in the first version is from a Vivaldi guitar concerto and the Boree from Handel's Water Music. In 'Tommy's Moan'--which in a way I almost like better--is Earthquake Pena's 'Kargyraa Moan,' his adaptation of Tuvan throat singing. I like it almost as well as sitting in my SeaRey making engine noises.

Tony - hadn't heard that song in a long time. I really like it because the singers' scream sounds like me during landing...
bounce, 'somethings got to give'
bounce, 'Somethings GOT to Give!'
bounce, SOMETHINGS GOT TO GIVE!!!, BOUNCE, 'AAAHHHHHH!!!!!!'

I can't believe my eyes when Seareyers discuss modern music!

Ken, you are thinking of 'Let The Bodies Hit The Floor' by Drowning Pool. Wow. Your 'hip quotient' just went through the roof.

PS Perhaps Drowning Pool would be a poor choice for a Searey video?

Tony Gugliuzza - Feb 07,2008 Viewers | Reply
    Steve,
I guess you didn't watch my modified version that Ken was referring to?
Drowning pool works pretty good with Seareys.

Steve DiGiacomo - Feb 07,2008 Viewers | Reply
Tony, No I had not seen it yet since I couldn't watch it on my iPhone, but I just watched it on my Mac and it's pretty inspiring. Not inspiring as in to go fly a Searey with binoculars strapped to my head, but simply because you are pushing the video aspect of this site. It has always been my intention to promote Searey's in movies and videos to people who might not have access to them. This begins by making movies that would appeal to different groups of people. You did a great job, please keep it up. Drowning Pool, bodies hitting the floor, something's got to give, yeah, this is one that could be forwarded to a number of my friends. I'm loving it.

Wow, who knew? Here I was making the Chronicles with smooth jazz. Like I said, inspiring. Thanks Goose.

And to Professor Carp, where else you gonna stick that thing?

Steve D
Don's the one pushing the video aspect, with all his experimenting with different camera mounts.
I'd love to put together some better videos, but its so darn hard to find someone to operate a camera. It's hard to fly and take decent videos at the same time. Especially if the video's perspective is from the ground.
My son did a decent job on footage I used for my 'searey day' video ( http://carolinaflyin.com/stuff/searey-day.wmv ), for a beginner. He did mention, as I was editing the footage, that if he had known I was going to make a video he would have done a better job. So he seems interested. I'm having him watch all his footage so he can learn whre he can do bettter. Maybe I'll have me a good photographer!.

If I had one shooting tip for your son, it is this. Always hold the camcorder with two hands with your left hand palm-up. The Left Hand controls tilt (up/down) and pan (left/right) and The Right Hand controls only zoom. Period. Once you do this the first time and watch it on the big screen, you will understand. Good luck and happy shooting.

And call me if you need to borrow one of my in-cockpit camera rigs. I have several.

I'll bet you knocked poor Don right off his chair! Now the landings and take-offs make sense.

    Thanks,
I've always wondered who did 'the impression that I get' !!

As for Less than Jake, I havent heard much of them till now.
I like the original '500 mile' better but I'm getting a kick out of their remake of 'I think I love you', heheh. Kinda reminds me of the 'so happy together' cover that A New Found Glory did.
I'm chekin out all he Less than Jake songs
