This email exchange recaps a great afternoon made possible by the Tech Site:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: Ross Vining [mailto:ross.vining@gpa.net.au]
Sent: Sunday, September 07, 2008 5:11 AM
To: twhite@pcwc.com
Subject: Australian SeaRey Pilot visiting USA

Dear Tom
I will be visiting the US on Business/Pleasure between Sept 12 and Oct 4.
I am hoping to meet up with Seaplane pilots, particularly SeaRey Builders/pilots whilst in the States.

I am a SeaRey Builder/Pilot based in Adelaide Australia.

I have built 2 SeaReys and now have 180 hours SeaRey time (+ 2,000 hrs on various other aircraft).
I am also the Editor of the SeaPlane Pilots Assoc Australia Newsletter and so am always on the lookout for interesting seaplane stories.

The SeaRey Locator lists your address as Long Beach CA.

I expect to be in LA on Fri 12Sep, Tues 23Sep and Sat 4Oct.
If time permits and you are available I would love to meet you and exchange flying stories.

Regards
Ross Vining

=================================================
Dr Ross Vining
Editor
Seaplane Pilots Association of Australia
mobile 61 (0)418 493 220
email= editor@seaplanes.com.au
=================================

Ross,

I enjoyed our time on Friday. It’s too bad that the LA weather did not cooperate, but since we didn’t make it to Catalina, you have a valid reason for another visit.

Flying the SeaRey has been a passion for years. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting someone else that shares that passion.

By the way, we both proved we are safety and code conscious pilots by not deviating from cloud distance restrictions. I didn’t mention this on Friday while we were buzzing along looking for a route around the haze and clouds between us and Catalina, but an acquaintance was lost to continued VFR into IMC on that crossing. We did discuss responses to VFR into IMC, but the best response is to not even try it. We even rejected the tower’s 2,000 ft altitude requirement because of cloud distance restrictions. Good for us!

I look forward to our future Catalina crossing.

Thanks,

Tom

We have a world-wide community of seaplane enthusiasts thanks to the web. Good show on all counts, Tom.
