The Will Rogers and Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane (W36) base at Renton (KRNT) is named in honor of the two famous Oklahomans who died in their seaplane which crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska on August 15, 1935. Wiley Post was the first pilot to fly solo around the world in his Lockheed Vega, 'Winnie Mae', and pioneered high altitude flight in his first practical design of a pressure suit in which he proved the existence of the jet stream with his flights up to 50,000 feet.

A memorial to the two men stands just outside the man-gate at the seaplane base boat dock.

The seaplane ramp is shown in a Google Map photo between the floating boat docks and runway and is Searey suitable into the fresh water of Lake Washington.

Plenty of boat and Beaver traffic from Kenmore Air seaplane operations on Lake Washington.

Both the arrival and departure paths to the seaplane base give great views of Seattle and are over fresh water until reaching Puget Sound.

Attachments:

Thanks, John. That's an interesting account of Wiley Post's journeys. Makes our SeaRey travails seem pretty easy.

Carolyn's looking pretty good for a 1918 model!
