While Catalina Airport can be treacherous for most certified aircraft, it is well suited to the SeaRey. SeaReys can approach high and fast to avoid the notorious cliff downdraft, and still roll to a stop in the first third of Catalina’s short runway.

The NFlightCam continues to fascinate, but its images can only approximate the splendor and excitement of actually arriving at the “airport in the sky.”

I knew I “give myself a good talking to” when aloft, but am aghast that the “On Final” checklist was replaced with a string of “looking goods”. Without the cam, I would not have believed it.

On a strictly social commentary, I note with derision that the cam documented that my 21 year old copilot could not “be there now.” Instead, both hands were firmly attached to her handheld device for the entire duration of the flight. She was well lost in communication with “friends” that were apparently far more important than actually looking outside the windscreen.
Attachments:

It looks like she was taking pictures with her phone, not texting.

Great video - thanks for posting it. I don't know where Catalina is, but the surrounding countryside is very similar to Northland in New Zealand, where I was living up until August last year. That sort of terrain makes for interesting flying, especially when you start to think 'Now, where do I put her down if she quits on me?'..... Its a bit different to Florida!
Martin, from NZ I'm not surprised you don't know about Catalina, but to us up here it's "26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina is waiting for me"...an old song that I bet many of the young folks on the site never heard about. It's 26 miles west of Los Angeles in the Pacific.

    Hi Tom:

Fantastic video. That camera is doing a great job for you. Does it employ a wide angle lense?

And best of all, an excellent landing! (g)
Best,
larry

I used to fly to Catalina all the time when I lived in Van Nuys. Have you done the Catalina take off yet? That is when as soon as you get past the end of the cliff, you point the nose strait down the hill.
