I left my house in Umatilla at 5:40am for the 2 hour 40 minute drive to Sebring. Even though it was still dark out, I could tell it was a dreary day with low clouds. As the sun came out I saw low clouds and it stayed that way for the whole way to Sebring, however as I drove onto the street to the Airport the sky cleared and I did not see a cloud in the sky. It was 8:45 and I paid the $5.00 to park and walked to the gate and paid the $10.00 to get in. It looked like it was going to be a beautiful day. Within 15 minutes the low dark clouds came rolling in and the wind kicked up. Most of the vendors were still closed, so I walked around to see if there were any other Seaplanes that weren't there last year. There was less this year, no Sea Max, no Mermaid. There was a Corsario MK-5 that looked like it was old or poorly built and painted. and the Aventura II was there. The two SeaReys that were on display were the best looking ones I ever seen.

I spent all day thursday there. most gorgeous day you could find! Friday an all day disaster rain/wind Most people work. I am a retired snowbird. Saturday,Probably the best. Half day Sunday to go. BUT.... one tent! Half the vendors... $5.00 Auto parking fee, initiated last year.....$10.00.. to park an aircraft, initiated this year. Am I going next year????? Half for more???? Has the LSA frenzy peaked? Have Lockwood/Sebring killed the golden goose? ...THE LSA DREAM:.......An affordable ( cost of a luxury car) aircraft. Failed to materialize? I think the dream was 60K The reality was 125K and up!!! Geezers, count myself among them, Filled the void.I had a paid for V-35B multiple paid for houses, and the four mouths that I once filled are now 45 years old! I could have excited any LSA salesman!

I bought a Searey, and would do so again!! Like it better than a Bonanza I owned for 17 years!! The LSA movement was to attract many new pilots, it was to attract many new LSA flight schools. It has not!!

HAS THE LSA DREAM RUN OUT OF GEEZERS, AND THEIR DISPOSABLE INCOME???

I learned to fly in a 172, owned by a flight school at Chicago/midway airport. Circa; 1965 paid 7.00 an hour, Tanks were full when you got them, fill them when you left. Gas cost 35 cents, approx what auto gas cost. But we saved our receipts , mailed them to Springfield and received a 7.5 cent rebate, equalling road use tax! My avgas was 7 cents less than mogas!! Paid an instructor as much as 5,00 an hour, ( I later instructed for that or less)

Left MDW for a grass roots airport 8 miles south. Students were blue collar, aircraft owners, 172, occasional 182, plumbers, carpenters, electricians. I was Electrician.

While at Sebring I spent some time at the Cessna booth. In the late seventies I worked approx 3 years for Cessna. 1976 thru 1979, Cannot count the 172's I sold at or near 20K. The first aircraft I owned was a 1964 172E which I purchased in 1968 for 7200.00 dollars. Purchased it from an FBO who became my employer, myself his chief flight instructor. He paid 16 K for it when he bought it new!! The 172 0n display at Sebring WAS 300K!!! Amortize 300K, stir in $6.00 avgas and add an instructor. How many blue collars are we teaching to fly???

Future pilots go from school to Embry, Blue collars read magazines. Licensed Ga pilots like ourselves will see disappearing airports, gas pumps and all that we hold dear

And the SeaRey LSX has increased in price $7000.00 since 2009, it was $27900.00 when I put a deposit on one in Feb 2009
In 2001 it was $19,900.00 and a Rotax 912 was $10,000.00

Having owned certified Aircraft for many years, it is refreshing that Progressive continues to improve it's product in a difficult economy....

Right on Lee you expressed it right on the head!

    On the mark Lee!
Closer to home, the LSX still masquerades at Sebring, Sun n’ Fun and Oshkosh as a proto LSA. Meanwhile, after three years of development it has quietly reached a realistic dry weight exceeding 1,000 lbs with a consequence of very low LSA useful loads.

Kenneth Leonard - Jan 24,2011 Viewers | Reply
John - but I'm sure the advertisement says it's 850 lbs...just like the most recent magazine article.
1000 lbs empty does make it a single seater if you are much above 175 lbs.
John Spratt - Jan 25,2011 Viewers | Reply
Here is one advertising a 514 lb/233kg useful load as an LSA or 672 lbs/305Kg as an experimental kit and with foldable wings. Attachments:

Vaporware! Every photo on their website is of a model. In at least one shot, there's even a model of a man beside the model airplane.
