I have a Searey for sale that is painted all white. I think I'm<br />Gonna put a coast guard color scheme on it. I would like to get feed back from anyone who owns a searey that has the <br />color scheme and from anyone who has seen it. I want this plane to sell fast so I want to make sure it is an attractive <br />airplane.<br />Thanks<br />Dan

The owner will let you paint his plane to sell it? Is he paying for it?<br />I think if he is willing to pay for a paint job you should let the buyer pick a scheme. Its like buying a new car and picking the color you want.

I have a searey painted in Coast Guard colors and get nothing but positive feedback from people <br />where ever I land. I have even had actual CG active members fly with me and they loved it once I tell <br />them it is the old Coast Guard paint scheme and legal (I assume any way---someone told me that and <br />I am sticking to that story)<br />Jim Garrett, Col.USAF Ret.<br /><br />

Is it still legal if you have 'COAST GUARD' on the wing and hull?

Daniel Paul Myers - Mar 06,2011   Viewers  | Reply
We will use vinyl...not paint. It will be removable so the buyer can change it...we want to advertise it <br />with a color scheme

I for one think it is much more attractive with a CG color <br />scheme. from a safety stand point <br />it may make it more visible. I also think that humans assume <br />alot and, if they assume it's <br />some sort of official air craft it may give them a sense of <br />security and much less likely to<br />'drop a dime'. a scheme like that would make the aircraft more <br />viable. imho. Great idea <br />Daniel.

Troy - I have felt the same way about the CG scheme. Plus, if it's vinyl, and you really screwed up, the vinyl could come off in minutes... not that any of us would ever need to do that... presto chango

Is there any written evidence that any paint scheme, current or outdated, is not legal? I can imagine if you put on the seal of the office or wore the uniform, or verbally identified yourself as an gov. official, it might raise some eyes, but isn't it a bit of a stretch to suggest that a paint scheme alone becomes 'impersonating'? Does anyone have anything that says 'The words 'Coast Guard' make it impersonation? OR any evidence that it does NOT.

Can we all drive around with 'Police' in the same font on our cars?

Thomas Alexander Bowden - Mar 08,2011   Viewers  | Reply
I would like a Orange County Sheriff paint scheme. I was an Aux Deputy in the 80s. That is how I qualified to buy a Peace Officer Special Edition Harley Davidson motor cycle. They only sell them to active or retired Law Enforcement Employees.<br />It would be neat to watch the boaters hide there beers as I fly over them.

Sure are a lot of airplanes with military paint schemes out there...doesn't seem to be problem.

I used to use my ss cobalt in police car shows...blue lights and <br />everything. As long as you don't claim <br />to be a police officer you're fine. I believe the same would apply

I think that the colours scheme would be OK, but adding the words 'Coastguard' could be construed as 'showing intent' to impersonate, with possible legal ramifications. Not only that, but imagine the furore if someone in distress thought you actually were the Coastguard, and you inadvertently ignored them because you were unaware of their predicament. On the other side of the coin, imagine if you unknowingly flew by or landed near some people engaged in illegal activities, such a drug smuggling or illegal immigrants and they took exception to your presence by opening fire.... Extreme examples, maybe, but possible, and worth considering. I don't think comparing it to painting military designs such as WW2 fighters or camouflage is quite the same. Interesting debate, though....

I wouldn't worry. I'm sure many of you have seen this albatross at OSH...a real (retired) CG plane      Attachments:

It's a great look! ...and don't forget the Idaho Coast Guard air cam, which now lives in NJ. That sucker can go vertical (solo with its 914s!)      Attachments:

I think the first one was built by Ken Addison, who told me at Garner's #1 that it was a legal paint job. I figured he probably knew for sure, because he had retired from US government, um, work that he didn't talk about.

Daniel, where did you get this picture? The tail number, paint scheme, strobe light and etc. Are the <br />same as my Searey---except for the writing on the side---Windermere Coast Guard . I bought it from <br />John Stevens in Orlando over a year ago. I understand he built another with the same color scheme. <br />Looking forwad to maybe seeing other similiar painted Seareys at Garners landing in a week or so<br />Jim Garrett

All the CG paint job SeaReys I saw had beautiful glossy paint jobs. I for one would like to see how the decal alternative would compare. It may help me make up my mind which way to go.

Vinyl decals and wraps have come a long way...most of them these days are hard to tell whether or not <br />it's paint or vinyl

Jim-that's your plane. It's still on bill kitchens sight. Bill sold it to John...then John built an lsx with the <br />same coast guard colors. John recently sold it and I flew it out to Texas for the new owner...ill have the <br />new colors on this weekend and hopefully have the matching interior done in a few weeks

Daniel, <br />Which town did you deliver the plane to in Texas?<br />Nice to know two Coasties are in Texas , not that many Seareys <br />in Tex as it is, like to met up with him

Daniel Paul Myers - Mar 12,2011   Viewers  | Reply
I delivered it to spicewood airport in Austin...nice area. I couldn't stay..I landed and got in the car to <br />head to the airport to catch my flight. I was the last one on the flight!

I am currently building a Searey and spoke to a USCG attorney in the reserves out of California. I showed him a photo of a CG painted Searey and told him of my intent to paint mine like that. He said if a complaint was sent to him, he would pursue prosecution. (USCG does Law Enforcement functions). However the case would probably be dropped if the owner removed the paint scheme. I believe that the authorities are more adversarial to the public on the left coast, and his was only one opinion from a reservist. That said, I still plan to use the vinyl coverings and go with the Legacy paint scheme. I am concerned how vinyl will hold (or be removed) on the fabric sections.

I wouldnt worry about him, Dave. I remember you telling me about him and it just sounded <br />to me like he was flexing his muscles. There are so many airplanes painted in military and <br />USCG schemes and I've never heard of a problem. I may email Bill Kitchen as he built his <br />with the USCG theme and actually had an emblem on it. I am having mine finished <br />tomorrow in the vinyl (not paint) and ill post pics and let you know how it looks.

A couple summers ago, I was taking a tour of the factory. Paige showed me one being put together that had the USCG paint scheme with the emblem etched in the rear windows - very nicely done. Didn't get to see the wings. I do like the vinyl you chose. Although, I'm kind of partial to the USAF design...
