I have a meeting in Orlando on Thursday(tomorrow)...planning on driving to watch the launch on Friday with my wife and 2 grandchildren (5 and 2)... I need some advice on a good area to view the launch...preferably not in a mass of people...but I am open to suggestions.

When we were in FL to watch STS 133 in February, we watched from Alan Shepard Beach at the end of the 520 cswy. The crowd was a lot lighter than further north. The beach is really nice and there are a lot of restaurants nearby as well as the Ron Jon Surf Shop. Captain J's is right on the beach with good food and an upper outdoor deck you can watch from. There are usually chairs and umbrellas that can be rented for the day right on the beach. If you get there early, the public parking lot is right on the beach. Any beach will be a pain when you leave after the launch because you need to leave by cswy, but 520 is probably the best.

Titusville affords the best views available, drive to the end of highway 50 and find space along the waterfront park. Go 4 hours early and prepare for a 4 hour return to Orlando after the launch.

I'm sorry I was late to this thread Wayne, hopefully you're going to make it but I'm afraid it's going to be wall-wall people no matter where you go. When I drove in this morning at 0530 people were already setting up in Coccoa Beach. Here's some advice from the Titusville webpage:

http://www.titusville.com/Page.asp?NavID=1279

1: Question: Where is the best place to watch a shuttle from?

Answer: Anywhere along Titusville’s shoreline will give you the closest unobstructed view of the Shuttle Launch Pads. For NASA Select telecast, restrooms, food and more we suggest Titusville’s Spaceview Park. Visit Titusville.com/space for other local viewing locations

2: Question: What can we expect to see during the launch?

Answer: You will see the shuttle on the pad, ignition, and liftoff. It is a picture perfect view on clear day or night, allowing you to see, feel and hear launch from the shores of Titusville.

3: Question: Does it cost to park?

Answer: Parking is free but limited, private parking may be available normally ranging from 10.00 to 20.00 dollars

4: Question: Where to stay?

Answer: Area hotels tend to book up early and people often choose to stay a day or two after the launch to tour the area or in case the shuttle is rescheduled for a following day. For more information Titusville.org/visitors

5: Question: Are there restroom facilities?

Answer: The local parks have restroom facilities and in some place extra facilities are put into place for the launch.

6: Question: How long before the launch should we arrive?

Answer: We recommend 3 – 5 hours however with the shuttle launches coming to an end it is difficult to predict the number of attendees how early people begin arriving. Be considerate of others and do not push your way to the front, the view will be the same.

7: Question: What about traffic?

Answer: After launch you should be prepared for extended delays. Our suggestion is to stick around and visit some of Titusville’s attractions, restaurants and shops while the traffic thins out.

8: Question: What routes do you recommend?

Answer: There are several ways to get back to I-95, in particular heading north on US1 to S.R. 46 and then West. This is also good for getting back to Orlando.

However we encourage people who are in the North bounds lane of U.S. 1 and North of Highway 50 to use Garden Street to get to I-95 and S.R. 46.

If attendees are in the South Bound Lanes South of Harrison Street we encourage them to Use Highway 50 or U.S. 1 and Fay Blvd to Grissom, South to I-95.

Basically North End visitors, especially those on the east side of U.S. 1, use north highway entrances and roadways west; South bound visitors, especially those on the west side of U.S. 1, should use south end highway entrances.

9: Question:Where is the closest medical facility?

Answer: Parrish Medical Center (parrishmed.com) is moments from most of the launch viewing sites,
951 North Washington Avenue
Titusville, FL 32796
(321) 268-6111

10: Question: Is the Canaveral National Seashore open?

Answer: Usually within 24 hours after a launch, however it is closed 72 hours prior to launch.

Thanks to Thayer Syme of Maplegate Media and Fly RC magazine (for whom I have written for the last 5 years) I have a small but published record as a writer. To make a long story short, I applied for Press Credentials for the STS-134 launch based on that and to my surprise was granted them.

I know how lucky I am, so here's my blog about it: http://sts134launch.blogspot.com/

Or - you can go home because the launch was scrubbed. I
assume that is what Obama did.

Thank you, eeeryone for your suggestions...I was there (Titusville) with my wife and two grandchildren...I arrived the very minute it was scrubbed....a beautiful perfectly clear day, but safety first... We beat the traffic back to Orlando and stayed there until today.
