After two years' searching, I've found what seems to be a good SeaRey and am about to close a
deal through Mr. Jim Ratte. I couldn't find Jim's name on a single List of Scoundrels or File of
Folks You'd Best Avoid. To the best of my knowledge, no one who's done business with him is
less than happy that they've met or have worked with him on their airplane.

After I complete the purchase and check out in this machine, I intend to fly it to the Garners'
Splash-In on March 25, and to the SnF Splash on the 29th. Later we'll be off on the 3,500-mile
southern route to California and Seattle.

Would someone please tell me not to do what I'm about to do, give me some reason why I'm a
fool for letting myself come this far and that if I go ahead and buy a Searey why I'm gonna regret
flying the thing and joining the community even if it decides to let me in?

Any For-the-love-of-God-don't-do-this or You'll-be-so-sorry warnings will be most welcome.
Richard - enjoy the ride and welcome to the family. Hope you've got pretty teeth because you're going to be showing them off a lot with the smile you can't stop.

Dan Nickens - Mar 03,2012 Viewers | Reply
Okay, I'll say it: 'You'll be so sorry if you don't do it!'

As for joining the SeaRey community, there is a strict requirement: you have to love flyin' fun.

So, go ahead. Make my day. Take the splash.

Dennis Scearce - Mar 04,2012 Viewers | Reply
I can't get to technical here but there are several other requirements of owning a Searey:
1) You must WUFF
2) You must read the wisdom on the STS. It's saved my bacon on numerous occasions.
3) You must get transition training until you can wear the plane. Not the xx hours recommended. Until you yourself can wear the plane.
4) If you are married, you spouse must be able to withstand you flying, working on, or talking about Seareys and their owners during most of your waking hours.
5) You must be able to do complex tasks (like flying a seaplane) while being in a delirious state.
6) You must WUFF
Richard Bach - Mar 04,2012 Viewers | Reply
Thank you Dennis -- excellent advice and cautions:
I've got WUFF from the Widgeon, Lake and amphib Husky;
I'll STS soon as the final BoS is signed;
I hope to checkout with Dan McKenzie, have written to Kerry and Paige about factory
checkout;
Not married, future relationship requirements just increased to include said criteria;
Will cross fingers and hope re #5;
Thanks to the Professor, I mutter 'POP WUFF 70' every midnight before sleep.

'Pop...Wufff....70 ' before sleep !! Future relationship requirements just increased
drastically.

I was in your shoes for about 4 and a half years,
I felt the same way. After trying out every single
plane under the sun that was physically and ethically possible for
me to buy. After 4 and a half years, I put on my big boy pants
tighten up my belt and went ahead and did it,
I found 1 that thanks to Daniel Myers, he referred
to me he was not even the broker in the deal, all he did was reefer
me to the owner in tallahassee florida. I went to the bank got a
cashiers check got in a plane and I
went to go see it. I had never even flown a Sea Rey before.
At the end of a 20 minute demo flight,
I told the then owner,' I'll take
it.'.He said 'okay let me know what you wanna do when you get
back to Miami', I said no need for
that here is a, check and a FAA bill of sale for you to sign.
I tell you it was the absolute best thing I have ever done.
Then shorty after that I met Jim. He did
my electric gear conversion. I could not remember the last time I
was so happy with someone that I had contracted to do a job with
me and for me.
Jim his Dad,
his friend Dan,a buddy of mind that
came me on the flight to drop off the plane and Me sat down we
all had lunch we had Barbeque
Ribs.
I was extremely take it back by his personality,
professionalism, his HONESTY,(that seem to be 2 nature to him),
and his craftsmanship.
I am now on my 2nd Sea Rey,(also thanks to Daniel Myers),.
Jim has done electric gear both of
them...
Jim, Daniel,Troy and just about everyone in this Family have help
me in so many positive ways.
When you become a Sea Rey owner you will see that now you have
another family.
The only regret I have is not doing it sooner. Therefore the only
regret that I for see you will have, is the intense
addiction to flying and the love of caring
for your plane. You will probly do as I do, look for every and any
excuse to leave work to go to your
hanger, jump in your plane and go fly around.
Don't forget to always have your wheels up!!!
so my only advice is, get ready to enter into a whole new world. by
the way on another note, soon
enough I will be jumping into LSX, as soon as I get Daniel to sell ot
trade my 310 for a RV or something smaller (I need hanger
space),.There is one thing I can say and
I hold this really strong to Haert and not to offend anyone else.
I can't wait to own a plane that Jim built.
Therefore it is obvious that he is the 1 I will contract to help me
with my build.( I'm pretty sure the site administrators will be all
over this as it may come across as an Endorsement ,LoL), but to
Say the truth, really all I am doing is
answering your questions in my own words and in my mind set.
richard, I guess when I see you pop up on the STS I will
congratulate you then.
Good luck and I hope this answers your question!!! WUFF

If this is the way you guys say 'Don't' I'd love to see what
you do when you say, 'Go
for it!'
I followed Dan Nickens' flights along with everybody here,
and thought, Man, if that little
machine can stand up to wilderness and 8,000-mile flights
and salt water and deserts
and bandidos and night fog landings on back roads in Baja,
it ought to be able to stand
up to me in the cockpit.
Thanks for your encouragement and replies. My guess is
that you all went through this
same time I'm going through now, except I've had the
benefit of talking with some
awfully good pilots here and reading your posts and seeing
your videos, most all of 'em
at least once. Of course a flight with Kerry last year helped
a bit...
I've been flying seaplanes for a few decades, and I'm
enjoying lots of study coming up
to speed on the Searey before my checkout in a couple of
weeks.
I'm a typical newbie sponge, so when we meet be warned
i'm gonna need to know what
you've learned in this airplane that matters most.
Richard,

I've had lots of experience with Jim Ratte and can assure you that he knows SeaReys,
has built many, is meticulous, honest, and first class.

Don't I wish, Tom! Is your base open for transient SeaReys in April? What great photos
you have of the place and the Splash-in! If you're open, I'd like to stop by and say hi, at
least, before the flight home.

Thomas Alexander Bowden - Mar 05,2012 Viewers | Reply
I can be home on a weekend if you give me notice. Week days are hit or miss. We are building a SeaRey in the Garagemahal so come and see the build.

Richard - if you're coming West in Florida, I'm just North of Tampa. Our lake always welcomes new owners and I work from home so give me a ring if you want to stop by.
813-416-7744.

Show us a picture of the plane or a link to the ad.

Richard Bach - Mar 06,2012 Viewers | Reply
The ad's gone, which I guess means the seller agrees I've bought it. I'll send pix soon as I
get there, on March 17, and start to check out in it. She's conservatively dressed, though,
no wild paints, but a wild and happy future I hope.

Jim Ratte - Mar 06,2012 Viewers | Reply
    Hi Richard,

Just so happens that the ad I had up expired on the 5th, I didn't take it down. Just didn't make sense to pay to re-up the ad on a plane that is essentially sold I'll talk to you tomorrow, got an appointment tonight.

Congrats Richard, you are now the proud owner of N346PE!

Richard, I know you're getting some transitional training but if you need someone to ride with you beyond that for a bit let me know glad to help.

Mike Purinton - Mar 08,2012 Viewers | Reply
OK, someone has to ask. Are you going to name it Jonathan Livingston Seaery ?

Richard Bach - Mar 09,2012 Viewers | Reply
Mike, I love and admire my little seagull, and he's fine with your idea. 'Soon as you
get your 16-point vertical roll down, Richard, and soon as you can slip off to other
universes fast as thought, I'll expect you to name your Rey after me.' I trust I'll get the
point-rolls down in a year or so, then I'll work on the other universes part. Be patient
with me...

Richard Bach - Mar 09,2012 Viewers | Reply
Thank you, Russ! So much to learn! With this fantastic family I figure I can pick up two
years' SeaRey experience in about a month. I'd love to fly with you, of course, and till we
leave for CA I'll be perched on Lake Agnes, 90 seconds from your back yard. Hugs to Lou
Ann, see you soon.

Congratulations! and welcome to a world few pilots will ever experience!
I started flying with my Dad at age 11, flew the right seat of a Mooney Executive 21 for many years. Soloed age 16 in a Cessna 140 taildragger. Bought my first Rey about ten years ago, I have never had so much fun with any craft like this one...
The versatility, the flexibility, the scenery out the windshield is unmatched.
You are about to embark on a Great adventure....Enjoy!

Richard Bach - Mar 10,2012 Viewers | Reply
Thank you for the welcome! You know just what I'm feeling right now, six days out from
meeting my Rey in person. Reading all I can here and on STS, watching every SR video
on youtube, memorizing speeds and rpm and instrument limits. Even the paperwork's fun!

Welcome, Richard! I don't know your 346PE but have known Jim Ratte since we rebuilt by Buc II together twenty years ago at Keuthan Aircraft. Remember, Jim? I have always held Jim and his building skill in high esteem! See you at Garner's.

Jim Ratte - Mar 20,2012 Viewers | Reply
How could I forget Walt? I'll never forget you walking into Keuthan's office after our first Buc flight together, and telling him to let me take out the company plane solo You forever changed my path, well Keuthan did too, but that's another story!

Knowing you'll fly the SeaRey is a moving thought for me - your writing inspired my search for my dream plane a long time ago. Still building, but not far to go now!

Richard Bach - Mar 18,2012 Viewers | Reply
Thanks Bard. Glad a word or two was a help to you on your path to now. The more I fly
the thing, the more I realize the Rey just may be that machine I've been hoping to find for all
these years. What a sweetheart!

    Congratulations Richard.
I'm glad to hear that you are bringing it to this area. So far there are only two other Reys nearby that are flying. Perhaps we can manage an adverture this summer.

Richard Bach - Mar 18,2012 Viewers | Reply
    Hi Gary,

Would love to manage that adventure. Are you considering Oshkosh? I might be open for
this year and it's make a difference if you wanted to try that. If not then Lake Isabel for
sure!

John, are you back in the air yet after your surgery? I hope all is well. I recently got back in the air myself twice in a week after my incident. Once in the Coast Guard Rey to be delivered at the end of the month, and also formation flight (during aero maneuvering) with Ivan in his Sonex and Dan in another Sonex. Wow, what performance those have, especially after flying Searey's for several years...
