    THe proposal to swap the third class medical for a driver's license for all private pilots has a serious flaw: it doesn't allow the change to be used in retractable gear airplanes, such as SeaReys.Even though SeaReys are Light Sport Eligible, private pilots would not have to give up their private pilot privileges to fly one without a medical if this exemption was deleted from the proposal.A comment to the FAA (Docket # FAA 2012-0350) stating the absolute safety need for retractable gear in amphibs is encouraged.     The Searey is classified as OK for light sport, even though light sport forbids movable gear. (I'm ignoring retractable vs repositionable) The Searey and some other amphibs got special dispensation and I'm fairly confident would maintain that.

    Uh, well, um, I guess I still don't get it. Read it like 5 times... I guess you are encouraging us to tell FAA that for safety reasons, the amphib needs to have ability to use movable gear?

    I'm guessing that:<br /><br />It is being proposed that one's Driver's License can be used by Private Pilots instead of <br />the Third Class Medical but this will not apply to amphibian pilots (because of the gear).<br /><br />Anyway that's the way I read it and using Russ' info below I added my 2 cents worth in <br />favor of the DL for amphibian pilots too.
