Flying my Rey from Tampa to Lake George, NY 2-4 Aug and back again 11-13 Aug for a long-awaited bucket list trip.
Would enjoy a companion airplane or even consider a companion pilot.
My XC time has been nil for several years and I'm finding the prospect exciting and somewhat stressful. The radio in busy airspace is not my friend.

Anyone interested in joining for all or part of the trip, feel free to post here or contact me at KNSLeonard@yahoo.com

I'll be talking with Greg B about some training time before then - specifically radio work and possibly BFR.

Mark Alan MacKinnon - May 31,2012 Viewers | Reply
Oh wow...my XC time IS nil, and this may be the opportunity to fly my plane down from Maine. Let me munch this over, Ken.

Eric Batterman - May 31,2012 Viewers | Reply
I'm in for some of the northern end of the trip.

Paulo Constantino - May 31,2012 Viewers | Reply
I'm interested too for the northern part. I'll be getting back from a trip but should
be no problem being part of the escort to Lake George : )

Don Maxwell - May 31,2012 Viewers | Reply
Ken, you should extend it by a few days and join in the Georgian Bay Gaggle, August 9-12. That'll give you even more interesting xc experience, and you'll get to know some of the kind Homeland Security folks, too.

In any case, you're welcome to stop here in Shangri-la-di-da on the James en route, either direction or both. (That's assuming we're here. Better call a week or so ahead to be sure.) You, too, Mark.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 05,2012 Viewers | Reply
Paulo - looking forward to it. Will keep you updated here.
Don - would love to see CN gaggle but that whole job thing, you know?
You're not still on Hillview, closer to the ghost fleet, right? Near Hopewell?
I've got family less than a mile from Norfolk IAP that I'll probably stay with in one direction but would love to visit you the other direction.
Daniel - happy to have you.
Bill-if all goes well, I'll be in Don's area the evening of 2 Aug. I may leave after work 1 Aug to get to NE FL for that night.

If my plane is done I'll join to about Charleston, SC

Ken, Let me know if you make it to Don's and maybe I can get away from the airport long enough to pop
down to his place.

Don Maxwell - Jun 05,2012 Viewers | Reply
Not at Hillview any more, Ken. We're at 37.305000, -77.215000. (14 miles SSE of KRIC.) Your return date might be better, though, as we're throwing ourselves an anniversary party on the 3rd and the house will be full all weekend, so we might be a bit distracted on the 2nd.

Mike Tumbiolo - Jun 07,2012 Viewers | Reply
Ken, if your going to Lake George you'll be just a few hours from me. I'm at the north end of the fingerlakes in a little grass strip in Waterloo NY (D93). We should get together and you can check out that single actuator gear you've been asking about.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 09,2012 Viewers | Reply
Mike - very interested in that. Would like to invite you for a visit at our place for some waterskiing or sailing but if that is inconvenient, I'll try to make it your way. I'll plot the route.

Mike Tumbiolo - Jun 11,2012 Viewers | Reply
That sounds great Ken, I'm on the road right now. I'll have to check with the boss to see what she has on our schedule. I know we have some camping trips planned. One way or another it would be nice to get together.

Robert Charlwood Richardson - Jul 11,2012 Viewers | Reply
Mike you are 2:45 north of me. Any good lakeside inns I can splash into
for an overnite on one of the Finger Lakes?

Check out Hammondsport on the southern tip of Keuka Lake- lots of B&B and leave the
plane on the ramp. Birthplace of Seaplanes and the Curtiss museum

Mark Alan MacKinnon - Jun 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
Ken, do you have a bad weather back-up plan for this?

I have vacation coming up; right now I'm toying with the idea of flying over to Lake George for a visit while you're there, but then flying back to Maine. I just haven't settled on deciding to move my plane to SC yet.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
Mark - my weather backup plan is to park the plane anywhere I have to set down and rent a car. If I have folks in formation, rent a larger car and drop you where you need to go. Any seaplanes would be very welcome at the family place. Could probably put you up overnight there if you don't mind rustic.

Mark Alan MacKinnon - Jun 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
Rustic! You should see my home in Maine. No indoor bathroom; just a compost toilet outside. No problem with staying over.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
We have indoor plumbing now, but not when it was built about 1903. No heat or insulation so summer only. Attachments:

Ken, where on the lake is it, north, center or south? I see it's a loooong lake. I would either fly north or south of Mt. Washington to get there, and wondering how I should plan it.

I also would be curious to see your flight plan from Florida. Are you going to try to land at airports with autogas?

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 13,2012 Viewers | Reply
Mark - central, on West side - Van Buren Bay is on GoogleEarth at:
43.70273 N 73.50443 W The house with the teardrop driveway.
I plan to fly shoreline most of the way and then up the Hudson River.
I'd like to find autogas but not sure how.

Don Maxwell - Jun 13,2012 Viewers | Reply
Ken, if you stop here, there's a gas station just down the road. But at airports I almost always buy 100LL. It won't hurt the engine in small quantities and buying it supports the FBO and the courtesy car. Most airports that have MOGAS only have 87 octane, so unless you have the 80 hp Rotax 912 you can't use it without mixing with 100LL--so I don't even think about it. Some marinas have 92 octane gas without ethanol, but they're hard to find and most aren't SeaRey-friendly.

Kenneth Leonard - Jul 09,2012 Viewers | Reply
OK - I'm pretty much as committed to this trip as possible. Leave Tampa after work 1 Aug for KSSI or Jekyll Island before dark. Leave at dawn (Thurs, 2 Aug) for VA. Next day (Friday, 3 Aug) leave at dawn for Albany, NY or potentially as far as Lake George. If the weather is iffy on the return, may leave on 10th with stop again in VA - possibly at Don Maxwell's place.

Please email me at knsleonard@yahoo.com if you are still 'IN' for where and when. -Ken
Don Maxwell - Jul 10,2012 Viewers | Reply
Ken, just remember that there's no AVGAS at Jekyll Island, and you'll have to rent a 'Red Bug' golf cart to reach a motel or car gas station. I'd phone the FBO for info. Ask about taxi service, but there wasn't any the last time I was there.

At SSI, be sure there's not a golf tournament, or reserve a room.

http://www.redbugmotors.com/

Don, have you heard from him yet this afternoon? When I drove up through there today (overnighted in PA, left motel at 4 am), going up I-81 to I-84 through PA and CT, it was VERY hazy. I kept thinking of Ken behind me somewhere, and how he was dealing with the lousy visibility and heat. I'm back at my camp now in Maine.

Don Maxwell - Aug 03,2012 Viewers | Reply
Haven't heard anything today, Mark. He left here about 8-something this morning, with clear skies, a tailwind, and about a three-hour flight to visit his mother-in-law, who's ailing in New Jersey.

Left For home twice today and returned both times. Staying with the
family
another night and hopefully, depart
Sunday am. Needed to circle up over the lake to get VFR on top but
when I got to 4000', everything to
the south looked unpleasant and mostly solid under cast. Oh, did I
mention 3600' peaks? Glided back down to give more family rides
along the lake. 13 new Searey smiles created this week. I'm
recruiting as fast as I can! One of the most rewarding weeks of my life
at least in part to several Searey folks.

Safely back home after 36.2 hours of flying. Just under 15 hours northbound and just over 17 hours
south. (including going to 10,000' to get above the clouds until I couldn't take the cold any longer.)
One 9.3 flying hour day. This trip was so educational, fun, inspiring and confidence building...a dream
fully realized! 4 hours giving rides to family. Flight following most of the way with many localized storms
to dodge. Definitely getting my IFR. pictures to follow. Attachments:

    And now the stats:
2200 miles
36.2 hours flying (including 4 hours of giving rides around the lake)
13 relatives flown & totally sold on the Searey. Ages ranged from 14 to 80.
1 near-arrest (maybe two?)
1 promotion AFTER I told my commander about the near arrest.
1 beach landing (my first) (see near-arrest #1)(#2 averted because I left instantly upon police cars' arrival at PA lake)
lots of great and timely weather updates via text by Professor Maxwell
1 trip-saving part overnighted across the country by Dan the man (loaned by a member who likes his privacy)
1 bilge symbolically pumped out near a certain SFRA.
1 life dream fully realized...warts and all.
I can neither confirm nor deny that it was Ricketts Glen State Park, PA. Didn't know it was a park at the time. After I got on the water, I noticed there were no boats with engines...
The several boaters I spoke with were happy to say hi.

Eric Batterman - Aug 14,2012 Viewers | Reply
When in doubt in PA, do NOT land on the water. Especially if your plane is red, white, grey, and black. 99% of the lakes are off limits.

Well done, Ken! Now you know how easy it is--and how much fun in a SeaRey.

And now that you're home again, is there any part of the trip that you'd do differently?

Kenneth Leonard - Aug 15,2012 Viewers | Reply
Good question Don. 9.3 hours is too long to be fun in a SeaRey. Not having a backup aircraft GPS made me nervous. (I have a handheld VOR) Weather on the iPad would have been worth the $700. There were several folks I really wanted to visit with but felt I couldn't because of time constraints (including the Canadian Gaggle) - but until I'm retired, that is a fact of life. A flight of 2 might have been more fun but even solo, it was a blast. The giant iPad map & Dynon reduced the workload a lot during marginal VFR. As did flight following which warned me about storms ahead and several targets well before I saw them - one would have been too close without the warning.
I did learn not to bother departing when the dew point spread is less than 1 degree. In the fog at under 500' for immediate return - even with blue sky all around the airport. That required flying the tightest pattern you ever saw that took me right over a recent president's parked G4 at, um, well, under 400' to get back to land. Yeah, that, I would do differently. Fortunately, the secret service guys must have still been with their hookers because they didn't shoot me as I thought they might. (strange things go through your head when you just did something stupid and are trying to save your butt)
Did I mention the beach landing? Yeah, they are probably out for a while too...

Oh, found this picture on my cell phone - never thought I'd get that high in a Searey, but she did just fine. I will admit that it only happened because I thought I'd climb a couple of thousand feet to get over these clouds at 3-4 thousand to escape the turbulence... both massively underestimating how high they were and that they were rising. Another lesson learned. Attachments:
