Maps and low-tide info: http://abstractconcreteworks.com/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps/TajMahouseSeaplaneOps.html Seaplane Games: Well, we might try a feweasy ones, like grapefruit bombing or short takeoff, but only ifit's going to be fun for everyone. RSVP if you can, for a food count or more info. Otherwise… justsplash in and take your chances on the grub. Looking forward to seeing you on the 13th of October! = Don & Carol Maxwell P.S. If you don't happen to have a seaplane handy, the roadsare quite good here. And W96 (New Kent County Airport) is afew miles to the north. (One courtesy car, or we can pickyou up. Call us to coordinate rides.) P.P.S. Please pass this on to other seaplane pilots whomight be interested in coming. Rain Date: if the WX sux on the 13th, we'll try again on the14th. Hey Don is the James River navigable up from the
Chesapeake? I have a 37ft ft sailing cat with a 4 ft draft. Any
chance the James could accommodate it? I'm always looking
for reason to explore plus the Searey won't be ready.

Don Maxwell - Sep 09,2012 Viewers | Reply
It is, Mark, all the way to Richmond, some 25 or 30 water miles above us. The main shipping channel is, um, 25 feet deep or more--deep enough for ocean-going freighters. From there to our place should be okay at high-ish tide, but might be a squeaker at other times. (I suppose 4 feet means 4 feet of hull that doesn't retract, and there's no supplemental floatation.) But there's a marina just south of the bridge with water plenty deep enough for you at all times. We're about half a mile south of it. Anyway, one of the nice things about catamarans is that they don't flop over on one side when the tide goes out.

John Robert Dunlop - Sep 11,2012 Viewers | Reply
    Perhaps she's a 'cat boat'
You, know, single mast (and sail) at the bow..

Don Maxwell - Sep 11,2012 Viewers | Reply
Could be, John. Or maybe it's a Catalina.

Which reminds me: Does anyone know what the draft of a PBY Catalina is?

Mark Callender - Sep 12,2012 Viewers | Reply
Thanks for the info, Don. It will be a 3 day sail but we are
seriously thinking about it. I wish it was a Catalina except for
the fuel cost considering my cat, when not under sail, only
burns 0.7 gal/hr cruise but then again did I mention the 3 days
sail part? everything has a price....

Mark, you'll give 'low and slow' a whole new dimension! You might have to do some motoring coming upstream above Hampton Roads unless the wind is right. The main shipping channel is deep and clearly marked, but the river is miles wide in most places, and can be shallow elsewhere, so be careful when tacking outside the channel.

Thank you Obama- TFR for Saturday 2:00PM till Tuesday - Specifically prohibits seaplane
operations in the 30 mile arc which I think includes Don's home.
Not having good luck making fly in's this year- first the Gaggle weathered out and now
Obama. This TFR crap is ridiculous, like it really does anything to protect him. What it
does is cause problems for all the good pilots and would not do anything to prevent a
terrorist from doing his thing

Arrrr. (Insert the expletive of your own choice.)
The TFR essentially prohibits water takeoffs. So we'll go directly to Plan C--postpone until October 27. Everything else the same.

    Well.
It's Tuesday night, around midnight, and the forecasts for Saturday are all over the place. Some suggest that tropical storm Sandy may blow right up along the coast and others say, "No Problemo!" My own guess (tonight) is that it will be mostly cloudy and mild, with smooth air and a light breeze, and in the 70s.
So we're waiting until Thursday to make the call. (Can't go flying most of Thursday anyhow because the President is coming to town again.)
In the meantime, could you let me know whether you'd be up for a seaplane Adventure on Saturday November 10 if we have to cancel this Saturday?
High tide on the 10th will be perfect--at noon--and the weather is usually quite nice here then. The air is usually dry and clear, and the daily high temp is generally around 70. Sunny days are lovely and mild here all month. The water along shore is warm enough for comfortable wading. (The water 67 right now, at midnight, with the tide going out.)

P.S. Why not on the 3rd? The tides here go in approximately two-week cycles. So on Saturday, November 3, low tide will be just past noon. That's not a problem for a SeaRey, but would be less comfortable for anyone who couldn't taxi up onto the beach, because of having to slog over 50 or 60 feet of mud.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. Aw, rats.

Weather Update Synopsis: Change splash-in to 10 November 2012.

Longer, blabbier version: It was a close call when I conked out last night, but the situation is clearer this morning. Tropical storm Sandy and a front from the west are apparently going to mix it up hereabouts all weekend.

My favorite forecast site (usairnet.com) is predicting less than 5 miles visibility, ceiling 500-900, and surface wind from the NNE, increasing steadily all day. North and northeast winds here heap the water up considerably (there's a 2 mile fetch from the north and 6 miles from the east), so that the beach can be completely under water at high tide.

The area forecast doesn't look good, either. (Appended below.)

So I'm disappointed--and sorry to frustrate your plans. But it seems best to wait until the 10th. We don't want anyone to take unnecessary chances. Several pilots (including Aircam Randy) have said the 10th is a better date for them, anyway. And the weather is usually nice here all through November.

Of course, the average temp is a little less warm in November, although sunny days are usually mild and pleasant--often in the 70s. The water temp should still be in the 60s, comfortable enough for wading although a bit chilly for swimming.

As Jeff pointed out in email, the days are getting shorter. On the 10th, sunrise here will be at 6:43 EST, sunset 5:01, and high tide 11:31 AM. If that's too short for your comfort, consider staying overnight Friday and/or Saturday. We have plenty of room.

Carol and I hope you can adjust your plans. We're looking forward to seeing you on the 10th!

=Don

The Taj Mahouse on the James River

We expect good weather this time. The forecast is for light air, temp in the 60s, and sunny.

And look!!! The water's fine!!!

PBY-Icewater-ColdBay-Aleutians-h

Okay, so that was in the Aleutians, during WW II. Here on the James River the water is much warmer-- 58º at the end of the pier today.

Carol and I hope to see you on Saturday.
