Carol (my wife) doesn’t like this video. She said, “It’s pretty disturbing.â€
It’s not my favorite, either.
I started out to make a happy video—a 60 second silly thing about coping with social distancing by going flying.
But when I couldn’t even force a selfie-smile about the Die Happy shirt—which ordinarily tickles me just to look at it—I felt SO angry!
I’m angry about the whole situation and especially how the U.S. government’s mismanagement of it has affected lives all over the country and is part of the same ignorant stupidity that is causing the glaciers to disappear in Patagonia and everywhere. Stupid.
So I was about to scrap the video. But then I happened to think of the Okeh Laughing Record, which I’ve enjoyed since hearing it as a little kid. (A very similar recording, but without the cornet, played constantly in the “Laugh In The Dark†ride at the Euclid Beach amusement park in Cleveland, where I grew up.)
That changed everything, and I was able to finish the video. It’s still not my favorite—but “pretty disturbing†is Okeh by me.
Maybe I’ll try for a happier one in a few days...

My Die Happy shirts were produced by a local group who were developing a thoughtful alternative to Facebook. They soon changed the name to goHappy--a pleasanter sounding name that doesn't amuse me nearly as much.
