Hi all, Cheryl and myself have now booked our 1st Oshkosh adventure. We are flying Air Canada
from Australia to Vancouver then on to Edmonton, to stay with some friends for a few days. We
then fly to Chicago on 21st of July. We will be hiring the 27ft monster RV on the 22nd and driving
up to Oshkosh on the same day. At this stage we are anticipating staying till Monday the 30th. We
will then stay a couple of days in Chicago, before heading to San Francisco to catch up with
friends. Then a couple of days in Vancouver before returning home 8th August.

Any suggestions for Virgin Oshkosh travellers? Would also love to catch up with as many Searey
owners as possible.

Im going... a virgin also so to speak also... plan is to moor and camp at the seaplane base. I will be looking to leave NY as
early as Friday the 20th. Not 100% sure of my plans, but I do know I will be living out of my airplane for the better part of
2 weeks.

Bring lots of bug spray, you'll need it at night! Weather can be unpredictable too. I've gotten up in the mornings and its 40 degrees out, and 90+ in the afternoon.

    Hmmmm...

Sounds like Melbourne weather in summer back here in Australia. It's winter here in Australia looking forward warming up in the US.
Cheryl and myself live in Brisbane where we have a reasonably mild winter, it is 46 Fahrenheit low tonight which is cold for us.

Thanks Jim for the bug spray tip. In Australia we drive on the left-hand side of the road, not that I am worried about driving this
monster RV from Chicago to Oshkosh. I am more worried about getting lost. Any tips for a iPad app for navigation?

David, I think Jim's bug spray advice was probably intended for Brian, who'll be camping at the seaplane base. There ARE mosquitoes there, although I haven't found them bad, as the campground was sprayed regularly each time I've camped there. You probably won't have to worry about bugs with an RV at the main show. As for the weather--well, OSH is in the upper Midwest, and summer temps can vary widely, especially depending on whether it's dry and sunny, or raining. Evenings are often chilly there. I usually plan on wearing short sleeved shirts but bring a moderately warm jacket for when it gets cold or really windy. 45F or 50F at night isn't unusual, although most nights are around 55 or 60 F. The link is for AVERAGE weather; extremes are possible.      Attachments:

Thanks Don, looking at the average temperatures I am certainly glad the show is not held in January!

Brian came to the rescue of another SeaRey with a broken tail wheel cable by being well prepared, stocked in parts, and generous.
Good show, Brian!

Thanks for the photos, Brian! I don't recognize the track in the bend of that river--is it the Ohio?--but the other shots are familiar. And it's good to know you got home safely and (I trust) had a grand Searey Adventure.

Not sure of official name but i guess I would call it the inter coastal just south of Newark bay. It was an adventure, and one that I’m
not in any hurry to do again. About 25hrs of flying in 8 days has satisfied my aviation needs for a while.

Thanks, Brian! It's good to see blue skies there at last. Is that your solar powered tent?

Good work, Brian! And that Marathon pump looks like O74, Elliott's Landing, Mount Victory, Ohio.

I just love watching Seareys taxi up to a car gas pump like that. Nice three-pointer. Plenty of runway there. Did you go inside and have lunch?

Brian Furnell - Jul 28,2018   Viewers  | Reply
I did on the way home. Think that hamburger was a bit over $100 though

I love places like that, where you can gas up your airplane like it's a flying car. Another fav is the Dutchman Creek marina, on a lake in SC. Land on the water, taxi up the boat ramp and across the parking lot to the pumps. Then go inside for a burger. The only thing better would be a motel on-site.

The photo of your Searey nosed in to the bank of the lagoon shows the empty water line clearly. It's a good reference for when you look at the airplane floating in the lagoon, to see whether it has taken on any water. If the tail is low, you may have to raise the tail or lower the nose to get that water to the bilge pump. I've often thought of painting a Plimsoll line on my Searey, just for that purpose.

Brian, I've rotated the photos that were sideways. (Administrators' privilege. The thumbnails look fuzzy to me now, but clicking on them opens them sharp and clear.) And now I see that two others--3 altogether--are at O74.

The way to rotate photos is to click on the photo, then on "Edit Picture." Remember to Save. (Only available to the original poster and administrators.)
