Looks like fun Luis, however it would appear that we would have a hard time finding smooth water to land on with all the boat traffic. Is
there a beach to pull up on to join in the festivities at each point that would be amenable for the searey? I guess if the winds are right
maybe landing on the deck of one of those mega yachts

Luis Sotero - Jan 10,2016   Viewers  | Reply
Yes there is a beach and yes it's accessible to sea rey and other sea
planes. I have gone there over 50 times with and without the poker
runners.

Gilberts looks good - the start is at Grove harbour marina- were do beach there?

Luis Sotero - Jan 10,2016   Viewers  | Reply
We would actually start at KTMB.
Which is essentially an 8 minute flight to grove harbour. We can choose
to
circle around in the or maybe do some sightseeing or we can choose to
land, there are little islands in the harbor we can taxi up to...
I will facilitate tie downs and or hangar space for all Sea Reys or Pl @
KTMB Planes.

Looks good except they want $400 registration fee and be a member of the club//doesn't look like that much fun

Philip Mendelson - Jan 12,2016   Viewers  | Reply
I believe you get a few meals for the $400 and definitely some GREAT eye candy..

Luis Sotero - Jan 12,2016   Viewers  | Reply
    Welllll,?.. Kevin
Based on the fact that for the last 24 years and throughout every year
hundreds of Gals & Guys, that are NOT [penurious--ed.].
Come from all over the country and spend thousands of dollars to
transport their ($400K+)Boats, Cars, Motorcycles, and themselves, etc
(We as pilots of Sea Planes are exempt from this costs) to participate in
these Events/Runs and interact with fellow members. This has to have a
significant amount of fun and enjoyment to balance out.
Yes this type of event is definitely does have an expense. But well worth
it.
The entertainment and eye candy itself is worth its weight in gold trust
me.
I have been a member since 1998 I do these events with my Cigarette
Top Gun or The Sea Rey which are matching.
I also have a new 57'
convertible sportfish yacht for the longer time extended trips.

It took quite a bit of effort on my part and organization on behalf of the
Florida Power Boat Club to accept sea planes into the events. Reference
the registration fee.
For us is significantly less than others.
It does have its perks and benefits.
Over the years I have had fun and enjoyment on each and everyone of
the 40 plus Poker Runs.
I have participated in either with the Planes or the Boats.
I figured that my extended Sea Rey family would like other options then
just jumping around in the middle of nowhere from lake to lake ,and
actually do something with their planes. Extend an invitation to do
something fun adventurous and new.
I know the Florida Keys better than anyone in this group. Both from the
air and the water. No one better to show you guys around.
Having others fly along is a lot of fun down in the keys.
Membership does have its rewards.
Philip & Kim Mendelson came on one actually 2 of these events 1st in
their Sea Rey to Key West and on the other for the Bahamas Poker Run in
the Mooney.
Phil and Kim had a blast the 1st time so much so that he jump through
hoops to come the 2nd time.
Then again Phil is NOT a Tightwad.
On the trip to the Bahamas we went in the cigarette Phil met us there.
After riding in with us and being a part of the event Phil said and I quote,
"You haven't lived until you've done this".
So I guess that it is just a matter of opinion and we can't knock it until we
try it. If it's enough or not.

I must say, Thank you to our friend Luis Sotero for the hard work and dedication to our flying family.
He and his group went ALL out to my us feel welcomed and included in his events. He took Kim and I to places we only have dreamed
about. If as a Searey owner you have the time and money to visit this south Florida paradise, I personally would highly recommend it!

Administrators' note: Invoking the "be nice" clause in the Splash and Dash rules, the site Administrators have agreed unanimously to delete a portion of the discussion that seemed to be turning ugly, and we have changed the wording slightly in Luis's post just above (noted as [deleted--ed.]) to remove a phrase, the connotations of which might have been misinterpreted, and replace it with a more neutral one that carries the same denotation. We apologize for editing anything on this site, as we generally oppose censorship in any form. However, a sad previous experience--some ten years back--has left us sensitive to this stuff.

However, if there are objections to this high-handed administrative act, please let us know, and we'll be happy to discuss and reconsider it.

Luis Sotero - Jan 13,2016   Viewers  | Reply
Agree with the administrators. No Worries guys.
Thanks for nipping that In the butt...
I have far better things to do then to be dealing with people getting their
panties in a knot and having to school them.
Obviously on this thread it's not my intention for anyone to get their
panties in a knot or me having to school anyone. it's supposed to be
for
fun...
Thanks!!! LoL

(Not sure this file works here. I'm getting a "404 Error File Not Found" error.

It's supposed to be an mp3 of The Jamies' "Summertime."

"Well, shuck them books and throw ’em away.
"Say goodbye to dull school days.
"Look alive and change your ways.

I consider myself a cheapskate and am proud of it, but my wife seems to disagree with me when she see's what I spend on aviation.
We all have priorities on what we spend our money on. I fly with a guy that has a Citation X and a 120 ft yacht and he stands in line
for the free mugs at conventions, go figure. But lets not digress. In case I can't make it down for the event as I still have to get a
flight down and kinda want the weather to be good before I commit.
I was wondering Luis if you would spend a few minutes and up date one of the flying destination maps like Rob Richardsons mid
atlantic (even though it is not only mid atlantic )(https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=zntiwejeLt8Q.kpKPlMpW6dBw) or
Chucks wiki site which he can't find any more, for all these places that are Searey friendly in the keys for future fun.It seems I have
been the only one to put info about the Keys
Thanks

Kevin, a friend of mine had the same problem with his wife. One day when his wife was getting on his case (I think he had just gotten the bill for the annual) he said "Look, I don't smoke, I don't gamble, I don't go to strip clubs, and I hardly drink anymore. If it's not the airplane, pick one."

Chuck Cavanaugh - Jan 14,2016   Viewers  | Reply
Luis, I second Kevin's request that you and everyone else post any cool SeaRey sites to WikiRey (found on splash n dash 0r here:

https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=z6S_aXQZ619g.kII7CNwywhmw )

We should have a centralized source for cool, things to do with the 'rey other than - as you say - hopping from lake to lake (not that there's anything wrong with that!)

I have to work over the days of this event (although I am trying to change that). Keep the info coming.

Luis Sotero - Jan 14,2016   Viewers  | Reply
I will gladly work on that.
FYI, in May there's an actual Air and Sea Poker run to Key West.
From there a few of the boats are continuing the Poker Run to Cuba.
After a whole lot of organization and head turning I am finally Scheduled
to fly( commercial /charter) to Cuba in 3 weeks to pick up my Landing
permit (paper work),and I
plan to fly the Sea Ray to Cuba stay a few days and fly back (in May).
Cuba is an Extension of the Key West Air and Sea Poker run.
In case weather doesn't permit or anyone don't make it down for this run.
If anyone were to have any questions or may want to speak with me feel
free to call me at 786-357-4663.
Sometime tonight I will try to sit behind the computer and update the
SeaRey/Seaplane friendly locations.

Luis Sotero - Jan 14,2016   Viewers  | Reply
I have added 7 new locations in the Upper Keys to the map.
I have roughly 12 more in the keys to add.
That I have frequent or frequent quite often I have enclosed some details
that can help make the trip or getting to know the area a little better. I
have only gone as far down as Islamorada so far.
I will also be adding a couple locations in Miami in South Florida as well
as about 8 great places in the Bahamas being that I frequent them quite
often as well.

D'Angelo, Kevin - Jan 15,2016   Viewers  | Reply
Great add ons Luis,, Any of those areas in the keys have problem landing at low tide?
Your Highbourne addition- is that a hotel or food stop? Love the Exumas- best stretch of islands for boating and flying in the Caribbean

Luis Sotero - Jan 15,2016   Viewers  | Reply
    High Bourne is has both.
Where I dropped the pin is a place that I have found is the best for the SR.
Also the folks that run that marina/beach are now very familiar with the
SR and have no problem letting the SR be beached
and spend the nights on the beach(Wheels Down). That area has great
local foods and sleeping accommodations in hi Hight Bourne.( beautiful
place)
The only place I would say you should land inside the channel in if you're
not familiar or sure of the time level is the Island Grill number 1
Oceanside that area is not grassy or sandy at the bottom. But you'll be
perfectly fine in that 68W foot channel. Other than that the ones that I
have posted so far there is no problem as I add on to different places that
I go to or have gone to I will make note of any hazard as I did in Gilberts.

As per the magazine Speed in the Water"

"One of the “air” participants of the poker run, which is one of two Air-
Land-Sea events offered by FPC annually, was longtime FPC member
Luis Sotero of Miami. Sotero, who owns a Cigarette Racing 38 Top Gun,
flew his Searey amphibious airplane and has invited a few more Searey
owners to join him in the air this month.

“I’ve known Stu for a long time, and have always considered him an
innovator—his Winter Poker Run and his Key West Air-Land-Sea event
only solidified that for me,” said Sotero, who has been flying seaplanes
for more than 13 years and appreciated being invited to participate in an
FPC event from the sky for the first time in 2015. “We had a great time at
the Faro Blanco last year and can’t wait to get back there. I’ll be flying
again this year. It makes sense when you can fly 120 mph and burn just
five gallons of fuel. I don’t have to tell you how far I’d get on five gallons
in my Cigarette. Not that I don’t enjoy my boat, I do, the plane is just way
less work.”

Sotero added that if you’re at all considering doing the run in two weeks,
sign up and you won’t regret it. Heck, maybe he’ll even get some photos
or video of your boat from one of his mounted cameras."
