Has anybody tried this in their rotax ? It is supposedly a safer alternative to TCP for when you have to use Avgas. Here is a link http://www.decalinchemicals.com/fueladditive.html

With ethanol (the joke) appearing everywhere it's getting harder and harder to find good mogas. Attachments:

Randy, I tried it on trips a few years ago in my 914, and noticed... nothing, which I suppose is, if not good, at least not bad. But then Lockwood told me that they don't recommend it for the 914 because they suspected that it promotes coking of the turbo. (They seem to say 'coking' a lot.) So I quit using it and still notice nothing.

Don, thanks, that's interesting because coking I would first suspect coming from not doing a cool down before shutting down the engine more so than I would ever suspect a from a fuel additive. I'll give Lockwoody a call and see if I can get a better answer.

    Heres the answer from ALCOR:

TCP has not been approved for turbocharged engines because earlier testing gave excessive turbocharger deposits in a particular engine. No data is available as yet concerning whether TCP will cause deposit problems with present-day trubochargers.

Obtained from:
http://www.alcorinc.com/fuel-treatment/alcor-tcp-faq.php
Timely post! I was just about to order TCP from Aircraft Spruce for my 912UL. Now I'm going to hold off. Randy, can you ask Phil what he thinks of this stuff for non-turbo Rotaxes when you call?

I don't know squat about this additive, but I can tell you the highly modified 914 engines used on the predators were very susceptible to turbo coking.

Randy,I've purchased the Decalin from Aircraft Spruce but only because Lockwood wasn't shipping TCP. I've not used it however cause my TCP hasn't quite run out yet. At a seminar at the LSA Expo 2 years ago, Phil Lockwood said the following relative to Rotax 9 series engines:• Auto gas as fuel: need to use a stabilizer since, especially in small quantities (as in carb bowl), it is unstable and forms gum and varnish in short periods of time, as little as a few weeks. Use Pennzoil Marine Stabilizer. Must use at least 91 octane, not the “mogas/87 octane)• Avgas, 100LL is very stable, need no stabilizer, but has 19x the amount of lead as auto fuel. Using Avgas, need to add TCP at rate of 1 oz per 10 gallons due to the leado Avoid low power settings (below 3000 RPM)o Avgas causes lead on valveso Change oil every 30 hourso Expect it to disappear in another 5 years or so.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. 100LL is going away, it's only a matter of time. Friends Of The Earth environmentalist group have filed a well-written lawsuit to finally 'put a fork' in this stuff. Trouble is, finding an alternative.

Randy, have you called Lockwood yet?

Sorry Mark I've been out of the country for a while but I plan on doing it later this week when I'm back in the happy land of radar contact.

    Okay listen up.....
Just got off the phone with Jeremy at Lockwood Aviation. He say's they do not know anything about Decalin good or bad, they continue to recommend TCP for the 912 series but NOT the 914 due to the burnt lead (little white bits) coking up the turbo.

Interestingly enough (probably some of you knew this already) engine-wise there is nothing inherently wrong with ethanol in the Rotax engine. However it is the lines and the fuel delivery system that does not care for this additive hence the limit of no more than 5% ethanol in any Rotax fuel system. Of course you chemical engineers out there will probably point out that the addition of the ethanol also makes the fuel less effiecent as well.

Jeremy recommeded that if you are running a 914 on Avgas you're just going to have to change oil at greater frequency (25hrs as most of you know). He also said that Rotax 'may' issue a directive allowing the use of up to 10% ethanol in the near future but no idea how 'near' that future is. As far as Decalin is concerned I see on their own website that they advise you will probably see white powdery residue from burnt lead so this would lead me to also believe that it is probably not good for turbos either. Maybe I oughta just get some kind of diesel engine and burn a mix of jet fuel and bio-diesel in it ! Hope they get that little 125hp Gemini diesel that I saw at OSH up and running soon.

Thanks, Randy! That's good info. With a diesel, you could fly from one marina to another on their used french fry oil.

Mark Alan MacKinnon - Feb 12,2009 Viewers | Reply
Thanks Randy. I may try the Decalin.

Rotax should know by now that states are mandating 10% ethanol, so their 5% permissible limit is worthless. I hope they do update it.
