It is a Ultrasonic Altimeter for use with glassy water landings.

The unit contains a small box that houses the circuitry and is mounted in the cockpit. There is a transducer, which is mounted to the right wing strut, right at the strut to fuselage intersection. Power can be either hardwired into the electrical system or use the 12 volt plug-in. Audio from the unit must be connected into a Unswitched Audio line through the intercom; plugging into a headset jack hasn't had favorable results as the audio levels are too low. Power requirement is less then 200 milliamps.

The system runs a self test at power up, and becomes 'live' at 45-50 mph, and will need a connection into the pitot line. FlareAssist will announce altitudes starting at 15 feet, then at 10 feet, 8 feet, 6 feet, 4, 3, 2, and finally 1.

I've been flying the FlareAssist for several months now, as well as a couple of other test SeaRey's. With a safety pilot on-board, I've flown approaches in completely glassy water without ever looking out the cockpit. Didn't know I was on the water until the hull simply slowed down.

I will say it takes constraint when you hear the 1 foot marker to avoid pulling the stick back to try to flare! We are very close to going into production, and are confident with taking pre-orders for the SeaRey.

For more information please see my website. I will also have a display at Sun N Fun, Building D, Booth 086.

http://seareyspecialist.com/flareassist.html

Read what others had to say:

Ken Leonard - Mar 26, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

And this was brought up in an article in the jan/February edition of water flying mag.

Jim Ratte - Mar 26, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

Was that supposed to be a jab of some sort? Not likely every MyFamily member is a member of SPA. And since Jan, there have been some changes to the unit.

Ken Leonard - Mar 26, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

No jab. I just got the mag yesterday and saw it. Page 12. Why the mag says jan/February and hits my
mail in late March...I dunno. But it refers to what you said so I mentioned it. If folks on this site aren't
members of SPA...well, I can't help that.

Steve Kessinger - Mar 26, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

Even worse when a magazine says June/July and it's still March.

Jim Ratte - Mar 27, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

Sorry Ken, wasn't sure the way it was worded Interesting that this morning's email I received a client saying he had just received the SPA mag yesterday with the article as well. I knew they were considering running something, but not that they actually had done so.

Wayne Nagy - Mar 27, 2014 Edit | Delete | Viewers | Reply to this item

maybe not everyone is a member of SPA....but when I was
skiing in Utah last week my
grandson met a fellow AOPA member...He gave my grandson
the 'cold shoulder!' :-) Attachments:

IMG_5240
IMG_5240
