Description: Rolf approaching Lake Michigan. The water is beyond that line of fog. We could see it from this position, but the camera couldn't.

So we turned north and flew parallel to the shore, a mile or so out. After a few minutes it became clear (that was about the only thing that was clear) that we weren't going to be able to get around the fog without crossing all the way over to Michigan--about 40 miles across Lake Michigan at that point. We didn't want to do that because it was out of our way and also we didn't know what the clouds were doing to the east. It looked like they were getting progressively lower there and to the north. We could have turned around, but that didn't look too good by then, either, and in any case we wanted to go north, not back to the land-planes and the trepid ones.
