Great story Don! The next day Doug and I overflew Sturgeon Bay and landed in Ephraim-Fish Creek were the nice FBO lady loaned us her SUV so we could grab lunch at the nearby golf course (great!) We then headed across Lake Michigan to Beaver Island, searching the south and east shore for your aircraft. When we didn't find you we carried on to Drummond Island where the wind sheer was just awful (I think we both 'landed' three times!

I was at the county airport on Beaver Island, John. It's almost deserted, but is a lot closer to my friends' house than the other, more popular one that's close to town. Both airports are in the northern half of the island. The flying on Friday was very pleasant. But the forecast was badly screwed up. If we had waited the extra day the visibility would have been better, but we would have missed out on the boat trip. (I didn't have a single useful weather briefing the whole trip--2000 miles--and I got one for every leg of it.)

John, please eleborate on the wind sheer and these 'landings'... sounds pretty dicey.

Bret, Drummond Island has a nice paved runway with a golf course both sides (and a 90 degree grass strip.) The problem is the trees along the edge (and golfers that drive their golf carts back and forth across the active!) This occaision presented a quartering 15-25 mph crosswind that hit the trees and turned to rotors across the runway. With noone else in the circuit, we had no warning till about 5 to 10 feet when all hell broke loose. Doug was ahead and did yell a few expletives but I certainly wasn't prepared to fall out of the sky then suddenly find myself airborne again with one wing low then on the ground again... Lucky we didn't damage a gear. Then again this week we did find a hairline crack in one of OrcaRey's bulkhead verticals (right at the gear pivot hole) so perhaps we didn't get off scott free after all. Guess we coulda (shoulda) gone around and used the grass strip (we did for departure) but I had already closed the taps when things fell apart..
I'll let Doug elaborate on his 'adventure'..

The wind was even stronger with gusts at Gore Bay but virtually right down the runway. We really didn't have much trouble there..
