Description: Experimental Ducted Fan Float Plane?

Mississippi State University had an experimental flying bubble on display at Oshkosh. I asked the graduate student how they came up with this strange looking design. “Well, dern it, it ain’t all that hard. We was bored wit cutten cotton so’s we done decided to make us’n a arrow plane that could make quick work of dem fields. De’s awful wet so’s we needed to keep it from bogging down in the mud. Now ol’Cuz there is such a big blow hard that he parts the foam in his’n an everbody’s beer at the bar and that’s what give us the idear. See here, we’s mounted Granny’s attic fan to the bumper then we put some kitchen fans in the back seat. They’s blowin down to these little leggy things. I spect this’ll work jus fine, kinda like Bobby Joe’s airboat. What’d ya’ll think?”

You're right, Chet, and I've slandered a very good program. Here's some real information about the airplane:

V-11, V-11A Marvel 1965 = STOL experiments. 317hp Allison T63-A pusher; span: 26'3' length: 23'4' load: 662# v: 225/184/x range: 265 ceiling: 15,000'. One of the first all-fiberglass aircraft. Shrouded, tail-mounted prop; perforated wing surfaces for continued experiments in variable-camber and boundary-layer control technologies came with an Army contract in 1965 as Parsons XV-11A [65-13070] (contractor Parsons Corp). Tandem wheels in small pontoons were later used for amphibious experiments. Returned to MSU in 1969, it was extensively modified in 1982 using new composite materials, registered as [N2768Q].

I'd sure like to have seen those amphibious experiments.
Mississippi State University, Raspet Flight Research Laboratory, Starkville MS.
According to the FAA database, Mississippi State has built and destroyed two other airplanes, as well.

There was similar plane in the UK, although the ducted fan was just behind the bubble and had twin booms and a conventional (twin boom type) tail. Lot of Hoo-ha when the prototype was flown, thought they would have the world market for cops and spotters but I think it crashed before it ever got into production.

Well, Don, If it was de-regged in 2003, how is it at OSH 2004? I guess they missed when they took the destruct-o-ray to it!

Aw, jeez, Jim. It's the FAA--cut 'em a little slack!

Maybe the lawyers got it. I can't find a registration number in the picture.
