Doug, I wonder if Buck will figure out what happened to your starboard sponson?

    Buck,
Wind was not a factor that evening. It was dead calm. The picture surprised me as I did not recall dropping a wing and a no time during the many water alightings we did was I at all concerned about catching a wing float. Your right a picture from the shore would be helpful. To suggest it was an accident in the making is a stretch.

    Buck,
I have been flying for 33 years. Long enough to know when I've made a mistake and old enough wise enough to admit it. This wasn't one.

Buck is correct about one thing, 'sponson' is certainly not a correct description of 'wing float assembly.' Sorry about that chaps..

I rather expected Buck to make a 'SeaRey accident' out of a photo made more intriguing by telephoto foreshortening...
In any case those of us who have trained with Kerry know that his 360 degree 40mph step taxi is usually done with the inboard float just above the water. I asked him what was wrong with letting the float touch the water. His reply was to put the float on the water...

John, I too like Kerry's teaching style. When I asked him if he ever used the third notch of flaps--we were over the trees on short final for a lake--he said to try it. I did and decided to stick with the second notch generally--but I also knew from experience what full flaps do on a SeaRey.

Buck's right about that not being a telephoto effect, but I don't know about the envelope. There doesn't seem to be much rudder deflection in that photo, so it doesn't look like Doug was in a sharp turn. In my SeaRey the limiting factors on step turns are hp and aileron.

Buck, neither Doug nor I were pushing our envelopes but perhaps we were pushing yours? We do lots of touch and goes and power-off approaches too. How many do you practice?

Don, I didn't take the photo but it looks to me that Dave used a fair amount of TX by the apparent proximity of the shore. No question Doug has his wing down but I don't think the float is in the water (on very close examination of the spray trail I can't see a smaller float wave trail or spray.)

Aw, shoot, John. Buck will no doubt push you back after that question. But not me. I NEVER practice--just go flying.

    He loves pushing, doesn't he?!

Doug, Orcarey looks great thx for the posts. Also I wonder how the AL skin at the rear under the horiz. is holding up? I used 2024 .020 instead of the PA crap and did some zinc cromate corrosion control and was curious if it is 'oil canning' or ?? Also have you had any 'oil canning' on the wing LE yet? Thx again for the great shots of Orcarey.

Charlie, The splash pan is holding up well. No oil canning of the leading edge and John is very jealous. He wants to know how you did it.
