Description:
“And I had done an hellish thing, And it would work 'em woe: For all averred, I had killed the bird That made the breeze to blow. Ah wretch! said they, the bird to slay That made the breeze to blow!”
From The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
It’s a fine thing to kill that bird because it made such a big breeze blow! (But I didn’t do it, I swear!)
What possessed this little palm to strike out on the plain and stand alone all by itself along the far river bank? Surely it was too young to know the waters’ disdain when first it did make it’s home along the river’s flank. Now in the length of stormy days the river has left its bay and swamped the lonely palm, its roots all washed away. Sad, or maybe not, if its plan’s fulfilled. For floating upon the swirling tide to new lands the others’ll never see, the palm’s seed has taken a great ride.
